Birth Control Pills: The “pill,” introduced in the early 1960s, uses hormones (estrogen and progestin) to prevent pregnancy. Users have to take one pill a day and need a prescription from their doctor. On average, 5 out of every 100 women who rely on birth control pills get pregnant each year. The Cost: According to Planned Parenthood, birth control pills cost between $15 to $50 a month, depending on health-insurance coverage and type of pill. On an annual basis, that means the Pill costs between $160 to $600.
That is true for mainly generics though. Generics are meds that are are almost identical to the medicines produced by the original company but are slightly different chemically. Unfortunately, those slight differences can have big side effects. My sister tried a cheaper generic...it actually caused her to have major depressive disorder for the 2 weeks she was on it. Another example would be an anti-depressant I was on. The regular version was EXTREMELY expensive...like $180 a month with insurance. It worked great, but I decided to go on a generic. The generic did nothing, which was bad.
Fortunately, for meds in general, generics do work well enough. They can just taste nasty. Two of my meds are combined with HCL...dear god it's horrible.

Now this...I don't agree with...he IS a famous guy from Missouri...and he has been quite prolific in politics for a very long time for better or for worse. Don't let the Missouri legislature honor Rush Limbaugh

    Hey, how 'bout that:

Unless you're a public policy nerd, you probably want to scroll to the bottom and read the brief Conclusion, which (as should all Conclusions) sums it all up with very few words.

The active ingredients in generics are identical to the name-brand version of the same drug. The problem is that generics only exist once the patent wears off, so for newer drugs, there's no choice but to go with the name brand.
