Re: Chanting 'USA' at basketball game deemed racist
The way racism operates is fundamentally asymmetric.
To insist on understanding it in symmetric terms - that language works the same everywhere, that the mental baggage of the privileged is the same as the mental baggage of the disenfranchised - is to insist on never understanding it.

That's fine. I was just agreeing with whoever said that it was possible for "USA, USA" to be a racist chant. It can be used that way. It can also be used in a non racist way. I don't know which is which in this case.
A derogatory term that black people might use to describe white people is not the mirror-image of a derogatory term that (for example) whites might use to describe black people. A t-shirt with "white pride" on it is not just the opposite of a t-shirt with "black pride" on it. These things are similar in many respects, but they are not opposites.
Whenever I hear someone say something like "Yeah? Well why don't we have White History Month?" I want to smash their fucking face in with a cinder block. The testosterone says "this person is a problem that can not be fixed and must be removed". What I hope to be the better part of me calms the first part down, but the density of Not Getting It in phrases like that is so high that it's in danger of collapsing to a racist singularity and sucking us all in with it.
That's not to say that blacks, or latinos, or anyone else can't be racist. Of course they can.
I don't really know how to fix this problem. Insisting that we could all be the same is something I support. Insisting that - in practice - we are all the same is not. I don't know how to get from point A to point B, but I'm pretty sure we need to be honest with ourselves about that part before we can start.
I think that in the good ol' USA, USA, we're doing better than we used to. That's encouraging.

In fact, that might now be my new prayer: "Please don't let me die in a black hole of Not Getting It."Last edited by AetheLove; 03-14-12 at 05:05 PM. Reason: addendum

See the sand in the vagina started with slavery, pillaging of whole countriesī resources, destruction of civilizations...that has been attributed in large part to caucasians. So itīs kind of hard to take all the sand out of a thousand year old deep vagina or however long the caucasian race has been dominant in world history.
