More people need to be up in arms here
The Trayvon story is sexy to the media industry, and it's struck a public nerve (which I think is good), but I'm surprised at how little press this incident is getting:
Fatal Shooting of Ex-Marine By Police - ‘Officers, Why Do You Have Your Guns Out?’
DemocracyNow! isn't everyone's cup of tea, but they do a good job with the story:
Killed at Home: White Plains, NY Police, Called Out on Medical Alert, Shoot Black Veteran, 68, Dead

Re: More people need to be up in arms here
I think there has also been 2 or 3 more killings of black teenagers that havnt made the news at all. Its weird how the media jumps all over one case and ignores tons of others.
I read the first article, and I dont see why the police went in? Why were the police summoned? It was his medical emergency button that got pressed right? Wouldnt that just bring ambulance? If he said he was okay why would they break into his house? Im pretty sure no matter who it is, if its unlawful entry you are allowed to defend yourself right?
So an old man accidentally activates his medical emergency and after an hour of shouting at him and breaking down his door, they then taser him, because he wouldnt comply with orders to lay down? Its his house, he committed no crime... This is fucking weird.

Re: More people need to be up in arms here
It's weirder than that.
He told them through the door that he didn't need, and didn't want, assistance. The medical alert system that was activated recorded audio throughout the incident. Before entry, he says; "This is my sworn testimony. White Plains officers are coming in here to kill me."
There were no orders given. They don't tell him to get down. They don't tell him to put his hands up.
He's an old man, with a heart condition. It's 5am, and he's wearing boxer shorts. He calls "Semper Fi". The cops mock him.
He's tasered (the taser captures video - the police haven't released it). He's shot with a bean-bag shotgun. One of the officers puts two bullets in his chest.
Now that I think about it, "weird" isn't quite the word.
The video I linked to isn't short, but it's very well done.
Edit: I was going to post this in Kraker's "Governor signs bill to allow citizens to resist police" because of his argument that such a law is going to get someone hurt or even killed. But self-conscious reason was never alive in that thread.
Cheers,

Re: More people need to be up in arms here
Just so no one steps on your nuts......Once a Marine, Always a Marine.
I'd love to see that Taser tape.
I don't know if the cops should or shouldn't have been there.....who knows, who cares? If the old man charged them with a knife....ventilate him. At no point is anyone justified to charge the cops with a knife. Even if he went insane, the cops need to defend themselves.
If that isn't what happened, why would the cops give a shit enough to throw their collective lives away? "Screw the wife, kids, house....let's spend the rest of our lives in prison as ex-cops getting assraped and beaten daily". Especially over some random old guy. Not saying they didn't, because they damn well could have, it's that part of the story that I have trouble believing. Sometimes people do make that decision, just not usually in groups of otherwise upstanding citizens (that we know of).
Either way, I bet that tape tells us more than some audio-only LifeLock recording. And either way, it has a pretty sad ending.

Re: More people need to be up in arms here
Even in death you are a Marine. The only thing that changes is your mission.
As to your question i would have to say no. I dont believe they knew he was prior military before they got there. This imo has more to do with them thinking (like someone else around here) that he has to do what the officer says. Him not obeying their command put them into ego mode. Everything they did went toward insulting this man hoping he would cave. That however did not happen. Their ego is what killed this man and i hope the fuckers get the same in return.
