Or even that if we did expand it that it would be to TE benefit to the average citizen. Does that mean I think the only answer is to deregulate everything? Of course not, but if you had an employee/department at your company that was already screwing up the responsibility they have would your solution be to put them in charge of more stuff, or to tell them to fix their screwups first? Why should we expect less of the government

Politicians are wrong when they say "Yes, we can", but the fact that government can't doesn't mean that we can't. Free people accomplish wonderful things. While government wastes billions on boondoggles like Solyndra, X-prize founder Peter Diamandis explains how private investors have created cars that get 100mpg, space ships, and much faster ways to clean up oil spills, all without charging taxpayers a penny.

The X-prize wouldn't exist if these private entrepreneurs didn't have the tall shoulders of NASA to stand on. No company could have afforded to get space flight to the point of profitability on their own.

I doubt that, that's akin to saying the Wright bro's wouldn't have accomplished flight without the tall shoulders of Icarus to stand on or for that matter NASA wouldn't exist without the brilliant mind of Wernher von Braun.
