IPO today @ 11am EST. anyone buying? why / why not?

i'm staying out, too much opening day volatility. should be interesting to see where it winds up today and where it's by next friday.

lot's of talk about future revenue streams and urealized/untapped potential. given 900 million users, half of which apparently are monetized, the rest of the planet, the unborn, and lord knows what they're cooking up with the cash they'll raise... what is the price going to be in a year... or who will have knocked them off the hill by then?

your page was public domain, now the company is too. tech IPO's... soap operas for investors.

    Re: Facebook

imo facebook is a trend and it's beginning its downslope..

I think the reality of facebook is that it has become too business fashionable and all the grandmas are joining thus making facebook "the uncool thing to do"

Grandmas drive, and get tattoos, and I still see young people doing those things. If Google couldn't really put a dent in FB's business with circles then there will have to be something significantly better to get people to leave. Not saying it won't decline, and I agree with Manno about over-hype at the IPO, but I think it will be king of social media for a while longer.

    devils advocate waprosper:

myspace went a similar route becoming uncool... but consider that people are going to maintain a shareable social profile somewhere... and if you're going to do it, why do it on a new platform, when all your friends are on facebook.

has it reached the point where any new social entrants are simply overshawdowed? cool is one thing, but i've seen cool ideas crushed by existant ones. do people need a better reason to replace facebook profiles (representing social equity, and time spent on building maintaining them, as well as building a social network in a new paltform where there isn't an existing social network?), other than new and cool at this point?

Is that supposed to be a logical analogy? Grandmas get tattoos... LOL!!! I'll give you 1 out 100 at best.

The more and more that family and friends of family become attached to the student body via facebook the less and less attracted the student body will become. It's already happening.

I don't totally disagree with your theory, just how quickly it will happen. As Manno said they already destroyed MySpace. Google circles was supposed to compete, especially with all of the "captive" audience they had from Gmail users, but it fell well short. My contention is people are not going to stop using social media, so the question is what replaces it?

You gotta admit the grandmas with tattoos comment was at least humorous enough to warrant a 3.

Myspace was exactly what facebook is.. Everyone I knew was on myspace before fb became popular. Once fb became popular we moved over there. Same thing will happen with facebook.

Facebook took over myspace in popularity due to their small no nonsense model and ease of use. They are quickly becoming exactly what myspace turned into during their fall. They are getting too flashy...too customizable...and host too many dumb apps... couple all that with going public means that their going to try and turn more profits, and the only way they can do that is to add more flasy nonsense, more lackluster customization, and more dumb apps.

If you look at the history of myspace and why their users moved to facebook it reveals that most of the 2000-2005 generations of highschool graduates had migrated because they wanted no part of the younger crowds.

I believe that social media has always been driven by the youth and "what's cool". It's the world we live in sad to say..

Google+ has some issues with it right now. I'm as you know an android fanboy. Not one of those who will push their products, but I do like androids development platform. I believe that google has made a mistake with the implementation of google+. Their mistake is that they didnt take new and existing android users and establish a relationship with them via their gmail accounts.

Another words, how many people use android and of those people how many of them use their phone's gmail account as their primary account? Out of the people I know there is only about 1/4th that do. Most people want to keep what they have be it yahoo or hotmail. The issue with this is that google never properly sold the whole gmail/android/sync model to their client base. I believe that once they start doing that things will start changing.

I do believe FB will be sustainable for the next 5 years, however, I don't think that their product will be the most widely used in the next 5 years.
