if you don´t beat your children they´ll become douchey hipsters or self-righteous pieces of shit. 2 key things one needs to educate ones´ kids really really early in their childhood: 1. Respect 2. The value of the dollar $$.

Regarding spanking vs non-spanking and the perception that kids are "worse these days" ...

This topic has been studied to death; kids who are punished via spanking are no different than kids who aren't. Some kids are bad, and get spanked more. In fact spanking IS correlated with delinquent behavior down the road: kids who are spanked more are more likely to grow up to be criminal. Kids who are spanked more tend to ask for it. Note spanking and beating are not the same.

What do we take away from this?

Kids who are bad, get spanked or put on time out, some of them keep being bad, and get punished more. The more a child acts out and resists punishment (of any type) the more frustrated caregivers become and this often leads to spanking while their siblings may not trigger such responses. The same bad behavior may persist into adulthood. Hence a correlation between spanking and later delinquency.

Spanking does not matter much, it is also not harmful when used right. But beating your kids is directly correlated with adult problem behavior (not always, but mostly). And unfortunately, what many Americans think is simply corporal punishment, is actually abuse and beating.

The important thing about punishing is that it is consistent and arguably "fair." Otherwise it just creates fear or anger, not understanding. The statistics honestly show that parents who interact with their children to determine a "fair" punishment and allow the children to be involved in determining boundaries and rules have much more well adapted children, spanked or not. However, most of those parents are showing a trend away from spanking, but statistically they have more well behaved children more often ('could be though that because they have enough money to invest in parenting classes and counseling etc. indicate a comfortable home-life with low stress and a genuine interest in educating their child, which yields better results than uncaring poor parents in bad situations obviously).

Also, kids are not "worse these days." The fact is percentage wise less kids are involved in crime, less are getting pregnant and having sex, etc than they were just ten years ago let alone around the turn of the century. This is all very measurable and I don't need to post links, I have posted them before but we all have the internet. The modern media and current population density just make the bad really stand out (and there are greater numbers, but there is a also generally larger population in general).

How many of you have one kid who just asks for it, and gets spanked a lot. How many of you have one that acts out, and you put him on time out? Now how many that answered yes to either also have another child that never requires ANY punishment?

Is it worth mentioning that the numbers climbed in the 70's and didnt fall under that number till around 2000? Something changed during that time.

I also find it odd that every study i have seen focuses around 1968 to present (due to the climb in rates) like those same punishments didnt work prior to 1968. There is something to blame but i would disagree with their conclusion. Seen far to many times how it works while the screaming bastard on time out learned nothing.

    It is worth noting.

Those teenagers were the children of my generation (gen-x..meh) and I think it really has a lot to do with the culmination of knowledge, the web, and a desire for better "parenting" methods among other things. I know many of my friends who never touched a drug, had sex, committed a crime, etc. specifically because as they describe:they had seen enough friends/family go through whatever experiences they learn vicariously and don't need to. Or because they can read what happens on the internet, etc.

And parents started geeking out, studying "parenting styles" etc. Modern psychology has a lot of data and more people can draw upon it because information is easy to get now.

Both children and parents have been more informed.

But still, spanking does not seem to matter much because most kids don't frustrate parents to the point of anger-spanking (not punishment-spanking) so it is more about how punishment is handled generally.

Really, I think "non-spanking" parents end up spanking if they have a frustrated kid in many cases... which skews statistics... lol

I can agree with that. I just always found it funny on the claim they have when in our record keeping history we have a 20 year climb and nothing else out of the ordinary.
