Federal government wants more people on food stamps

Okay when the Republicans started calling Obama the food stamp president, I didn't really give it much merit. IMO the reason more people were on food stamps is because of the economic health of the country. Obviously if there are more unemployed there's going to be more on food stamps.

There is no reason for the ads, if you haven't decided to go apply for food stamps it's because you don't need them. Any person that's struggling to put food on the table for his family or starving most likely is already going to go apply on their own. They don't need an advertisement to convince them that they need food stamps.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been running radio ads for the past four months encouraging those eligible to enroll. The campaign is targeted at the elderly, working poor, the unemployed and Hispanics.
    However, this is also interesting.

President Bush launched a recruitment campaign, which pushed average participation up by 63% during his eight years in office. The USDA began airing paid radio spots in 2004.
Damn 63% increase under Bush? Yet I doubt all the retarted Republican supporters were outraged when he pushed for more people on food stamps and I don't ever recall Fox News reporting it. So if your going to call Obama a food stamp president, you must agree that Bush was also one. I'm telling you both of these parties are corrupt as hell....

Why is showing people how to get help a bad thing?

As far as people not needing them if they don't know how to get them, that's not true. If I needed food stamps, I would have no idea how to get them. I'm sure I could start calling government agencies if I wasn't too poor to afford a phone or internet and eventually find out how. But it's not common knowledge how to get them especially if you've never received them before.

The main reason there is an increase in the use of food stamps is because there's an increase in human beings who can't afford to buy food. It's government assistance to get food not boob jobs.

Showing people how to get help is not a bad thing, convincing them they need help is a bad thing.....think about it, there is no reason for the ads, if you truly needed help putting food on the table you would have most likely have applied for food stamps anyways.

    From the ad:

In one ad, an elderly woman is surprised to learn that her friend is on food stamps. The friend explains that now that she's retired and on a fixed income, the program "helps me eat right when money's tight."
Surprised to learn that she is eligible for food stamps? I agree that we need food stamps to help those struggling to feed there families, but there is no way you should be surprised that your eligible.....if you truly need the governments assistance it shouldn't be a surprise to you. If it's a "surprise" then it means that you were already able to feed you family on your own and your surprised that the government could of have done it for you.

I'm all for government social programs....but the programs were meant to prevent not provide.

Surprised is a horrible term to use in this context. You're surprised that you've won the lottery...not that you're eligible for food stamps.

This is their reaction "Well no shit, I need food stamps..."

...it's not shocking or a surprise.

Exactly if you find out your eligible for food stamps it should be a "no shit, I'm starving" response, not a "oh, really?, how surprising", if your surprised your eligible, it means your not really in need.

Who made you the decider on these things, when one should be surprised or not be surprised? That another person is 'surprised' that their friend receives govt. assistance has absolutely no bearing on whether the person receiving it, actually needs it. If you're a senior citizen getting by on one meal a day and you find out that the govt. can help you bump that up to two meals a day, how is that a negative?

If you want to cite specific examples of people abusing the system, go ahead. But that wouldn't mean that making people aware of services that are available to them is a bad thing.

Being poor doesn't endow you with an encyclopedic knowledge of government programs for the needy. Saying otherwise is the ramblings of retarded people.

IMO is simple I think that if you have to be made aware that you are eligible for food stamps benefits than you probably don't really need them. Do you disagree?
