Unfortunately that happens with all types of industry.

A single secretary with a computer can do the work of a whole secretary pool 50 years ago.

The last typewriter factory recently went out of business because nobody buys them any more.

Many jobs are eliminated by technology marching forward. It's a fact that cannot be gotten around.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

But who can you fault for that? The worker thatīs been doing the same job for 35 years doesnīt know how to do anything else because.....heīs been at the same job for 35 years! and then you canīt blame the industry incorporating new technology that will eventually replace that worker. What can be done about this?

    Re: No Spec-Work

I am a programmer. And I have to learn new stuff every damn day. The field is always changing.

At one point I decided that I wasn't going to learn .NET. I had no desire to do so and I had no reason. My current (at the time) dev tools were perfectly fine.

I nearly got left behind and I would be flipping burgers or something now. Now I realize that it's a constant battle to stay ahead of the curve and learn new tech. Same goes for these people. If you want to keep doing design, you'd better learn a different way. Do something to innovate, or realize that your field is drying up and you need to move on. Learn now so you won't be obsolete when it happens.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

We live in a world where almost technology could, at any time, eliminate almost any job. All it takes is the right new thing. The sooner you accept that, the better off you will be because then you will realize that you had better always be prepared for a career makeover.

As extreme as make it sound its actually an understatement. We already have machines that can build brick walls, paint, build cabinets, and so on. Construction is traditionally thought to be a hands on only but that is a things of the past. The only thing stopping those machines from taking over the job is cost. Luckily so far they havent come up with a machine that does flooring installation and automotive repair. So im still safe. The rest of you are fucked.
