Daily Kos: Romney Reductio Ad Absurdum, "Red States Have Bad Culture"
Everyone's heard of Romney's latest gaff in Israel by now:
"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel.
Romney said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

This same economic theory applies everywhere a few dozen really rich people just gave Romney a lot of money and implicitly require that he compliment them and validate their beliefs.
I'm not sure I understand why the Romney campaign is doing the things it does. Their message isn't designed to appeal to me. But, for me, this doesn't rise to the level of gaff.
You can obviously use the (weak, somewhat twisted) internal logic of his statement to construct insults - like Kos does (though I didn't read the link). But I think it fits in well with the message of the campaign.
So, in front of foreign contributors, unless he's insulting the US directly I pretty much don't care what he says since he's just trying to take their money and be polite about it. He's a pretty stiff public speaker. I wasn't expecting elegance. If anything bothers me it's that he's taking their money at all.
The quotes on the Olympics from the interview in the UK though... that was embarrassing.

p.s. might be interesting to take a look at just how much money his campaign has taken from foreign contributors. If it's significant, you could easily tell a story about irresponsible borrowing and a future burden of foreign political debt making Romney beholden to foreign interests.
"Is this who we want in office? Someone who owes lots of favours to wealthy foreigners who paid for his campaign?" ... like that.Last edited by AetheLove; 08-02-12 at 08:58 AM.

Isn't it Gaffe?
I only ask because I wanted to make completelly sure I was correct when I started the Twitter trend tag #GABFgaffe, because the tix sold out in record time, 49,000 tickets in 5 minutes. For beer.
Gaff?

Yeah, I guess it is. I used the word, but I was replying to Wicked's use of it and used it the way he did. In our post-witch legal system we don't subscribe to typo-by-association. I'm innocent.
I was going to ask Langrad to identify a particular type of sail rigging, but Blade Runner was the better call.

Normally I wouldn't threaten but it was the perfect opportunity to slip in a modified super troopers quote... But I literally see it every day in the news. Now im not an english major but even I know that you should mix it up a bit.
