You couldn't use it for security. For starters most people have critters going thru their yards when they dont even know about it. Then you have the wind activating it. Then you would have to keep everything pruned so other plants dont activating it. The only thing this is good for is disney hotels and people who would think they one uped their neighbor by having it.

Could be used for therapy. Some people need a little extra comfort in this world to get past/over a problem. If something like this provides a peaceful or pleasant experience, then that might be useful. I knew a guy whose doctor gave him a ball to squeeze when he got agitated. He has a list of shit he broke by flinging it at stuff in his house. This might work better.
[or not. he might have a plant-shaped dent in his wall rather than a round dent]
Could be used for direct sensing. Jam a sensor in the ground at 10 different locations in your fields. The readings (and changes in those readings over time) might help farmers more closely identify which crops are under stress. That'd let them target the application of fertilizer, pesticide/herbicide, and water to the places that needed it.
How cool would that be? Walk through the field, stick your sensor in the dirt, touch a corn plant on the silk, on a leaf, in the middle of the shaft, near the ground... and listen to the synthesized sounds. Or blinky coloured lights. Or boring text on a display. Some really great work has been done on ambient devices. MIT has a project page on it somewhere.
Could help you get laid. Show this to your intended. Let her play with your plant while you go get the wine. Then you both touch the plant for a while, making your own ambient jam. That sounds profitable to me.

I am going with you are just like the rest of us now and really don't know what the fuck it would ever get used for other than a novelty item that might get sold at a Spencers gift store.... That my friend is money in the bank but I will give you credit for holding out the longest in believing in this goof ball idea....

Oh.
I thought you were asking for speculation. I speculated.
This isn't my device, I just thought it was an interesting step. The crops thing was a riff on something a friend of mine does: gathers near-real-time satellite data and sells the remotely-sensed data to farmers - so they can tell where they need more water, or more fertilizer, or less X. He says they can do a pretty good job, but they could do it better if they had better data from on the ground.
Anyway, I don't "believe" in the idea. Why does it have to be "for" anything?

It should be noted this was just a slight manipulation of other very useful technology. It is not exactly time or money consuming to come up with, maybe to produce, but hey, you guys seem to like sports cars and other totally unnecessary equipment and developments as well.
All you need is a fuel efficient car with enough power to move X weight from point A to B. Yet billions have been spent developing and building totally unnecessary vehicles. Why don't you call out that waste instead of talking about how awesome they are? (not that I am against bitchin' automobiles.. but I have a point... we could pick all kinds of unnecessary artifacts you guys like and make the same argument). Why do we even bother to make music? It does not actually do anything? right? I am pissed at electric guitars now.saszeus liked this post
