We are sooo close to being off oil, not just us, but the whole world. There is a company called Sun Catalytix, started by an MIT professor named Daniel Nocera. Dr. Nocera is perfecting a technology, which isn't new, and the idea of it has been around a while. But essentially, you use photo-voltaic solar panels to store sunlight in water.

I'll spare you the boring science-y sounding stuff, and just say that every home on the planet could produce enough energy to power itself. All you need is water, sunlight, a Sun Catalytix electrolyzer, and a hydrogen fuel cell, and you'll produce electricity, water and heat for your home, year round.

With the exception of the electrolyzer, everything else is already up to spec. And the best part is, the materials used are so cheap, even impoverished nations will have clean water and energy.

I've been doing a ridiculous amount of research on this, as well as building a "passive" LEED home, complete with this setup, capable of producing my own hydrogen.

Unlimited power, pure H20, heat, fuel for a hydrogen car, zero emissions, and all for a very reasonable price. Imho.

    Science bitches. Powered by business.

All this can be yours if the price is right.

First of all resources are in abundance they are not finite on earth. Finite resources is a myth propagated by the media and the government for corporate profit. Scarcity the idea that keeps our economy in place is a myth as well. Scarcity is fabricated by the big businesses for profit using methods such as planned obsolesce. Second human overpopulation is also a myth. Right now the entire population of the world could live in an area the size of Texas or Alaska. It would be cramped but it is a 100% possibility. Hell we don't even use two 3rds of our planet for living space even though we could easily establish cities on water(they would also be more efficient to). Managing such a system world over would not be the job of humans we tend to make errors far to often and that would obviously be very bad. Instead through our knowledge of science and engineering we could create an integrated world wide computer and robotic network in which its sole purpose would be to monitor and operate the system we could even add a power grid while we were at it.

in the world we live in everything is free. once again the sooner you realize that one the better off you will be. there is no reason to be wiping out humanity to accomplish that reformation. all that it requires is an open mind and the deprogramming the conditioning that you were and are still bombarded with every day.

Wow, I find this fascinating. I haven't read about this. Do you happen to have any good links on hand? And just FYI, a quick little search points out that he did most of the research at MIT, which gets most of its research funding from, wait for it, the federal government. Government-funding of research for the win!

Well, I was considering putting up a thread about all that I've learned. If you want to wait for that, I will put it up today (hopefully). It will have all the links, and even some of my own ideas on the matter (like how to produce all your own organic vegetables on site).

Suffice to say, we are very close to this being a reality. But some of the components are really expensive, as with all new technology, it will come down as there becomes a market for it.

This research has, at every stage, been highly funded by the government. As usual, businesses stepped in at a late stage to profit from government-funded work. I'm not saying that this is bad, but to pretend that this is a triumph of capitalism is naive.

Why are you making this a political point? I don't give a shit who funded it. I'm not making any capitalistic overtures, nor am I being naive. C'mon. Not every post I make is about the evils of liberal, big government. This is simply an example of science... turning into business... making the world better.

To my knowledge, that's how its been all the way back to the East India Trading company.

This couldn't be more wrong. Science costs money, and in most cases, the initial costs are too high, and the time until profitability too long for businesses to be a reliable source of scientific funding.

I didn't make it political, I just pointed out that this science isn't "powered by business," it's used by business. That's great, and business is very good at using the results of science.

Yeah, I'll wait till you put it up. I do find this stuff very interesting, though. And I'd expect components to be very expensive at first, just look at consumer electronics when they first come out with brand new technology. Sky high, then they crash.
