I completely forgot about the geothermal option. Which is something I would LOVE to integrate. Did you know that even in the coldest winters, you can pull heat out of your pool using a heat exchanger? I had no idea that there was even "heat" in there.

My parents put in a geothermal system in their new house. It reduced their energy usage by more than 1/2. It is expensive though and will take around 20 years before it pays itself off.

It heats the water/air to 68 degrees, which keeps the temperature very neutral and minimizes the amount of heating/cooling needed

I serviced a few Geo-Thermal systems 20 years ago, and they were clunky over sized high maintenance systems. Here in the Northeast there was a drive to deactivate a lot of them as natural gas boiler and furnace efficiencies got into the high nineties, and residential A/C systems reached SEER ratings of 13 or better. (same could be said of the solar systems that got quite popular in the 70's) Now im starting to see the pendulum swing in the opposite direction as advances in engineering these systems have made them much less troublesome and far easier to service. Still expensive though, but comparatively speaking not as bad as they were 30 years ago.

My parents opted for pretty much the nicest one and I think there they drilled in 3 places for the house. They've had minimal trouble with them over 3 years

I've been an advocate of these for years , an old man I worked for back in the early eighties owned a pool company and developed designs for these. He tried to get financial backing to build a model but everyone turned him down, he's long dead now but I wish I could get my hands on his prints.
