That's not true, they are not in the 7.9% because they are unskilled, that is such a flawed way of thinking. So when the unemployment rate was 4% did that mean there were less skilled workers? Not at all. The unemployed consist of both skilled and unskilled workers. I know because I've done the research. After graduating with my bachelors I found it very difficult to find work, or even get a call back for that matter. Currently 1 out 2 college graduates are either underemployed or not employed at all. So really you need to do a better job finding qualified people, there is a huge excess of them waiting in the unemployment line.

I doubt many in the unemployment line can do what I do with the security clearance required to do it where I do it. If they were needed, they would be employed. Are you honestly suggesting that the demand for their labor exists but something is keeping them from working? If a person has a degree or training in a field with low growth or an over-saturation of qualified people, then not as many jobs will be available to them. Now if our elected leaders were better at their jobs, then perhaps there would be more demand for their labor.

But all of this is completely irrelevant to the topic. I can't control the demand or lack thereof for the labor of other people. I can only control myself and what I do. And if I do my job very well, I will in fact save the taxpayers money and deserve to be financially rewarded. You seem to imply that because others are not doing well that I should be penalized. And that is just damned un-American.

lotta hating on government workers here.

Would you guys say that hard working talented Best Buy employees, or other employees that work for corporations with bad leadership are not deserving of raises, just because their board of directors are bad?

I wouldn't just like I wouldn't say hard working talented govt employees are undeserving.

    Re: Pay Raises.

My wage has not decreased in the past 10 years. In fact, I am making 3x the salary that I was when I got my first real salaried position. I worked long hours, dealt with a ton of stress, and yes, finished my college degree in order to remain competitive in the job market. I have worked for 3 companies, 1 of which laid me off, but I immediately found more work for more money.

So yes, there are people out there that are getting screwed. There are people that work for companies that cut their pay, reduce their hours, reduce their benefits. All while jobs are being outsourced to other countries. That just hasn't been my experience at all, and I know many other people that continue to be successful year over year, while continuing to increase their salary. Hell, just about every person I hired on my team this year received a 15-20% pay increase over what they were making before coming to my company.

It all comes down to who you work for. If you work at Papa Johns, then yes, you are going to get your hours reduced because the owner is an absolute shithead. If you work for Wal Mart, then yes, you will likely never receive full time benefits as they will limit your hours.

I see nothing wrong with ALL federal employees returning to their normal pay increase schedule. And let's stop saying that our government hasn't done shit just because we didn't reach a deal.

Heavy is dead on. It used to be that a job at Mcdonalds was for teenagers entering the job market for the first time.

Now it's become a career for many adults. The US needs a hard reset.

This would be wrong, and counter-productive in many fields. Doing my job right saves the government millions. Doing it wrong can cost it millions..and peoples lives...paying the people that can do it correctly a competitive salary costs a little extra...but saves millions. There are a bunch of govt IT jobs that are similar. I kind of doubt that IT is the only career field that this is true for.

    Re: Pay Raises.

What mcd's are you people looking at? What i see is mostly college kids working there and i live on fast food. Our collage enrollment is at its highest rate in 40 years and you think the problem is people wanting to work at mcd's? Thats a fucking joke. Our unemployment rate is coming down very slowly but what the numbers dont show is how many people are working jobs below what they are qualified for.

I keep seeing people talking about not being able to fill positions and im gonna call bullshit. If your listing the job your getting resumes and your not placing people for various reasons but it sure isnt because you cant find anyone.

Many jobs markets are changing. Some use less people then they use to, some are going robotic, some are just happy having a low wage earner filling a position that use to have someone making good money. Even construction is moving toward robotic workers. Where we use to have masons building walls we now have tilt wall construction and there's even a machine that will build a brick or block wall for you. Lets not even think about manufacturing being almost nonexistant anymore.

Government employees account for over 20 million people in this country. Anyone really think there is money in the budget that hasn't been made for raises across the board for that many employees? Last time i knew we still haven't reached a point to where we aren't running at a deficit but we're going to move on with business as usual? That makes no sense. Its bad business and will aid in plunging us into our next recession/depression. Its just stupid.

    Re: Pay Raises.

If the government can't pay competitavely, then they will lose talent. Companies pay for talent. For my team, I would almost always be willing to pay the competitive salary because those that I would want to hire are the people that likely have the most experience. Sure, I could pay $32k and hire someone that can do the job. Or, I can bump the pay to $50k and get someone with more experience that could end up saving the company hundreds of thousands. In fact, I have seen it...

I hired 4 Analysts with a loaded cost of about $64k each. Year over year we were.able to produce synergy savings of about $1.6 million. Not having these talented folks on board probably would have cost us half a million.

If you dont pay for talent, the talent goes to the pay. Yes, manufacturing jobs.are.being automated. Welcome to the industrial revolution. Trade jobs dont last forever. Most of.them have a life cycle and then technology catches up to them and eliminates most of them.

Bs. The government will do what they do right now. Pay a sub to get the job done right and faster then any government/salary employee can begin to think. Thats the way its always been and precisely why the government farms out most of its high tech shit.

Not where I work. We are eliminating the contractors because they are not better than the govies, just more expensive. And what I do is very high tech. You were also wrong about hiring managers not being able to find people. I can find people who have the skills. I can't find people who have the skills and the qualifications. The jobs are all listed at usa.gov. Feel free to apply if you think you can do the job.
