SimCity launch debacle drags on, as EA disables features | PCWorld
As for SimCity, the server overload is certainly an inconvenience, but my biggest concern is not the launch, but the possible end of life. If EA provides the servers for single player, it can also take them away. We’re looking at a future where the games you bought can be effectively destroyed, and in the case of SimCity, the potential for meticulously designed works of modern art to be wiped out to make way for yet another sequel.
Thoughts? Concerns?

Re: Always online.
Basically they are treating simcity as an MMO. There IS no single player game there. So if that's the case it's always been that way with MMOs since ummmm... 98ish when Ultima Online came out. One of the drawbacks to it. You have to take it as a trade-off.
That said... What I want in a simcity game is a good single player game. Multplayer as a secondary feature. I do NOT want an MMO with no single player game. As such I won't be buying this game.

Re: Always online.
Always online for single player games are a horrible concept. What is happening with SimCity is not new and fully expected by yours truly and many more. And I fully expect this type of DRM to only get worse in the future.
DRM only seems to hurt the legit users at the end of the day. I was chatting with a group about this game and there was a group that are pirating the game just because that seems to be the only way to play it. This alone proves that the current (future?) is extremely flawed.
