Oh look... I didn't know it was time for all us ex-military types to whip out our junk and compare. Of course, I completely agree with this author of this article. This person is a shining beacon of hope in an otherwise drab green sea of three-toed troglodytes. I smell Pulitzer.

Also to your suggestion that the Air Force is not truly necessary, you may have a point. But all the other countries I can think of that have a navy also have a separate air force. Maybe it's because not many others have carriers or maybe they modeled themselves after us. But to my knowledge, everyone else separates the two as well.

Yeah but their army is separate from both as well. Yet here we are 2 mobile armies both with an air force one with some boats, a navy with air craft, and an air force. We are a poor comparison to the rest of the world in this regard.

The rest of the world is absolutely a poor comparison - especially when we spend like drunken sailors on shore leave.

The Navy has about 925 fighters and the AF has about 1800. Take out the National Guard and the AF still has more.

I wasn't in the AF, but my dad is retired AF so I am a bit biased.

From the numbers i saw the navy was at about 2200 but things could have changed.
