Magically, he was in between the Korean War and Vietnam. We weren't fighting with anyone. His ship never fired at a live target. It's not unheard of.

He also spent the last couple of months on a refridgeration ship. They are basically giant floating warehouses that supply perishables to the rest of the fleet. They have no guns. So, magically, the US Navy has those too.

Instead, he got to climb Mt. Fuji and train for a career that served him pretty well the rest of his life. Not too shabby for a farm kid from the desert.

Or maybe Smoken, just maybe....it was one of the overwhelming majority of subs that are used as deterrents, rather than being "sent out to kill".

This may come as a surprise to you, but the Navy still has ships that don't or haven't been directly involved in combat. In the same way that the Army has armored battalions that haven't done shit in years.

Less than ten years after he was out, we had a pretty successful draft in effect. Would you rather have conscripts or volunteers? Or are you trying to say that we would be better off without a military at all?

Oh and it's not just that it pays better than minimum wage. Free healthcare for themselves and their family, free grub, college money, sign up bonuses, etc.

All of that stuff is not free. The reason so many in the military are broke all the time isnt because the pay is bad. Its because they deduct all of that shit from your base pay before you get your check. Out here you can pick and chose but in there they decide what everything is worth for you to pay.
