Re: Apple price fixing....
I will say this in their defense. When someone that knows jack-all about tech asks me which tablet or smart phone they should get. And just wants something they can text, get email, browse the web occasionally on... I tell them they should look at the apple products. iOS is, for the most part bulletproof BECAUSE of it's closed nature. And thus it's PERFECT for luddites.

Re: Apple price fixing....
iOS RULES!!! Sync´d devices RULE! the cloud RULES! iWorks RULES! What else can I say...if you can´t afford it, buy something else...lots of other options! I just bought a macbook air a few days ago...it´s a beauty...slim, light, lightning fast...got everything synced with my other devices (ipad and iphone). What else can you ask for!? Thank you Apple, for making my life easier!

Re: Apple price fixing....
Exactly.
Likewise, when someone who knows jack-shit about automotive electronics and mechanics asks which car they should get, and all they want is something they can reliably drive to and from work, stores, friends' houses, and the occasional vacation, I recommend something that's relatively bulletproof and will require a minimum of tinkering and routine adjustment no their part. On the rare occasion that something breaks, I just say "take it to the shop, I don't want to fix it for you."
It's almost like most of them don't even own a torque wrench.
Damn luddites.

Re: Apple price fixing....
Quite simply, if the product fulfills the consumers needs and wants then the price they´re willing to pay for it is their own prerogative.
If you still have time to assemble a pc, configure the hardware, troubleshoot stuff that doesn´t work etc. etc. then that´s your choice...I used to do that when I was like 12 when I had all the time in the world. I´m a grown up now....unfortunately I can´t stay til 6:30 a.m. in the morning working on my RIG lol. What I look for now is a beautifully built, stable OS coupled by top of the line hardware that does more than enough for me and allows me greater portability and access to everything I´ve got on my computer and my other portable devices. Those are my needs now...not a 2 gb Vid Card or the best sound card on the market, for example.

Re: Apple price fixing....
I think that's true to some degree, but also think that it's possible to get ripped off. Paying more for something real, even if it's intangible, makes sense to me.
Paying more for a fashion accessory isn't my thing, and I'd argue it's stupid, but as long as the person in question knows what's up then I guess I don't care that much. I'd call them silly, but not ill-informed.
[of course, now I'm thinking about all the things I own which have, for me, some cachet or cred associated with them... which is basically the same as fashion]
But paying more for something which is demonstrably worse is a rip off. I've seen this in both the PC and Apple worlds.
My problem with most Apple haters who bitch about price is that they're only comparing the raw components; and they're often doing a really bad job of comparing.
In the PC world, that's the appropriate comparison. It's all commodity stuff anyway, and there is usually very little value-added software (most added software is actually anti-value... though there are exceptions. ThinkPads used to have some very nice utils). Sometimes it makes sense to say that a particular Sony was a good deal or that something from AlienWare was an overpriced piece of shit.
The Apple perspective is different. I've heard people argue about whether Apple is a hardware company or a software company and all I can think of is that those arguments are idiotic. Apple, more than any other company I know, has fully embraced Alan Kay's maxim: "People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware." Apple make computers, and multi-purpose devices based on computing and networking technology. The software and hardware are designed together.
It's like asking if Ford is an engine company or a body company. I guess that way back when there really were companies that just made engines and also companies that just made bodies (coach work, yes?), or transmissions. But the distinction is pointless for the vast majority of people.
Cheers,
