Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
Once he gets away with it no I do not think he deserves to die over a theft. While he is in the act and in my home he is of the highest threat imaginable in my mind. I will eliminate him unless he drops on his face with his arms spread. I am not there to punish him. I am there to protect me, my wife and my property. If he hesitates it leaves me vulnerable for his accomplice to jump me, take me gun and kill us all. I am not taking that chance. If you break into my home you likely will not get a second chance. I doubt I would shoot someone running from me in a normal theft situation most certainly not if they make it out of my home.

Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
I've got absolutely no problem with a person defending their home, with as much lethal force as they can legally own (please, no .50 cals). I actually wish there were more responsible gun owners who owned simply for this reason. Guns for home defense are like insurance, they're there in case shit happens.
What I'm not ok with though, is my neighbor defending my house with his gun(s). Too much opportunity for a tragic mistake. What if I've giving a friend of mine a TV and the neighbor shoots them as they're taking the TV to their vehicle?
I don't want the neighborhood watch armed. Your job is to observe and report, not play Keystone Kop.

Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
It's for sure part of the risk, but most home robberies are done because the robbers assume no ones home. Criminals know that you have every right to shot them so they target homes that are muti-leveled or homes where people are gone a lot. I bet if you look at the stats a majority of suburban home robberies are committed by non-armed criminals, cause they aren't looking to confront anyone just get in and get out.

And that is fine. If I am not home, they are not a threat to me.
However, if I am, that is the chance they took. They bet their life, and likely will lose it.
And if they were to so much as TOUCH a hair on my dog, I will guarantee they won't make it. In fact, I would then enjoy making them suffer.

Re: Do you really have the right to carry a gun in public?
Frankly, this thread wasn't intended to bring into question your actions in your own home. The law on defense in your home is fairly well settled.
The issue is to what extent do those rights exist outside of your home - now you are not in a position to expect absolute security, you are out in society where your rights are no better than anyone else's who may be walking around. When you are at home - the castle laws confirm that you have a higher ability to protect yourself and your property. When you are out in public though, different rules apply - it's been a long time since the days of the old west.
