I don't understand why angry, bewildered perhaps.

He told me that that while there is a difference between a white guy using it with a hard -er on the end and a black guy using it with an a on the end, it's not a word he would ever use and he said if he caught his kids using it there would be consequences. I understand the concept of taking it back and removing its power, but I think it would just be better if we all just stopped using it. Also, while we have a very informal work environment, he probably would not call me "dude" the other people like to use Mr, but I discourage that. They are all military so it's hard for them not to I guess. One of my bosses in the chain gets mad if anyone says Mr or Sir to him. I had to have a talk with him about it because where I was raised, everyone is a sir or ma'am and I can't help that.

This word is powerful because we allow it to be. There are many many words that have had "negative historical connotations" but we haven´t turned these into boogy man words; we haven´t turned these into taboo. We´ve said it again and again and they´ve lost their punch. Words like bitch or ass were considered really bad words not so long ago and now they´re used by anyone and everyone. Nigger you should be no different. I understand how it was used before; my point is we shouldn´t allow our societal progress to be enslaved by one stupid word; a word that is only important today because we´ve made it that way.

IMHO, societal progress would be everyone forgetting that word exists. The same goes for other words that are used to both designate and demean an entire group of people. Bitch should only be a female dog, fag should only be a cigarette and so on. But as long as there are online video games, these words and others will be abused.

People give it its power by thinking everyone should let it die. When you do that you end up with words like nazi being used when it doesnt apply. Its that side of the table that keeps the negative part of the word as alive as it ever was. Show people you dont give a damn about and people move on. Thats just how people are.

The problem is there are people who won't let it go and complain every time. You see it with the use of retard and gay. They run ads about how its wrong to say, "that's so gay." As it is saying "gay people are stupid because you using gay in place of dumb/stupid!" Problem is, does anyone other then the people against it ever see it as that?

I can understand the N word has a lot more connotations behind it, but at the same time is it hard to argue the meaning has changed with the way people are using it (yes I know the caveat is it is with an -a instead of -er, so different). Isn't that a good thing? I mean thinking about it hasn't the young black community essentially taken over the word and changing it from a derogatory insult to a sort of badge of pride (in a way)?

No, Nancy Grace is great. In fact we need a show with Nancy Grace and Chris Matthews together.
