Re: Business Innovation vs Social Convention
All you guys think you know what it takes to work in restruants? HA i worked at popeyes for 3 hours 26 years ago and let me tell you i didnt get a single tip.
Seriously though thats real and i do not agree with legal loopholes to pay people less then minimum wage. Why did we bother calling it that if we were going to hand out millions of exemption to it?

Part of that is the "pride" of America. Most kids these days would rather not work at all than work at fast food. Adults realize that putting SOME food on the table is better than making their kids go hungry. Sometimes "pride" and "laziness" can be interchangeable.
My first job was carrying a sign for a furniture store that was always "going out of business". At 14, it was humiliating, and sure was hot having to be outside in Florida, but I was making $8/hour under the table, which was $3/hour more than my friends working in fast food. They made fun of my job, but I was the one laughing my way to the bank every week. Paid for my first custom built gaming rig and the Voodoo2 I slapped in it. I have never been unemployed a day since that job. That was almost 17 years ago.

This. I too started working at the age of 14. I worked for my grandad roofing houses every summer while in junior high and high school. At 14 I didn't do much, and "only" made $5/hr. Starting at 15 I had learned what I was supposed to do, and did a better job of doing it, so I made $10/hr from then on out, cash every Friday. I worked way harder than most, if not all, of my friends, and also got paod way better.

So then why do we cater to and even support those that do not have the work hard for more attitude?
I went through the drive thru of Dairy Queen the other day (I treat myself to one blizzard per month, so sue me). The drive through attendant asked me how I was doing and I said fine, you? He said good, it is supposed to rain for the rest of the day. I found it odd because we were not short on rain so I asked him why is that. He said that when it rains we do not get very many customers. I thought damn, my fat ass is eating ice cream on a rainy day and this guy could give a fuck less if his employer makes any money as long as he does not have to work.
I have always said that if you have accepted a job for a certain amount of pay that you should work as hard as you can for your employer. If you do not think you are paid enough then find another job.

As someone who has also been working since I was 14(roofing cleanup at first and later moved to pc repair and fast food) I don't necessarily think looking forward to a slow afternoon is a bad thing. Now there's a good chance he and I would do drastically different things with that slow time as when I worked fast food slow day meant deep cleaning day.
That being said now I'm military and see the same attitudes here as you do in any job...why work harder when we get the same paycheck...guess that's why I get special assignments and early promotions and they don't. Drives me nuts having to motivate scrubs that don't want to be motivated all the time.

I hate to sound like crotchety old man, but I think the younger generation has a certain sense of entitlement. I see it in my kids, my kids' friends, and my friends' kids all the time. Not sure how, as a society, we chamge that though.

Every generation thinks they are smarter than the previous one and wiser than the next one.
I too started working at 14. My parents own a home building company. I started cleaning up the job sites and by the time I was 16 I was a full on carpenter. I learned the best lesson of all: physical labor sucks. So I got my shit together and now I do IT. I have not been unemployed at any time for the last 26 years. I had some shit jobs in there. But I worked hard and brought home the paychecks. I do worry about my kids though. Being overseas prevents them from getting summer and after school jobs since they are not allowed to work in Germany.

Lucky schmucks. I wanted to start working at 14, but my parents wouldn't let me have a job. Only reason I got my first one doing research for the AF was because my grandfather (was a captain in the AF when he did his service) was impressed so I got to keep it.
