Interesting assertion, and a pretty cool idea...as a short story/work of fiction. I have a hard time believing rumors and myth-making would trump torture, death sentences and (nation)state laws then or now.
It be a great young reader work of alternate history fiction though.

I'm not a historian, but I thought that Jesus's existence was pretty well supported. Now obviously, there's the invention of the wine-making, water walking messiah man, and that could certainly be described as "making up Jesus."
