I figured that we could use a break from government shut downs. The IPCC has released a comprehensive report on climate change. IPCC - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Here's a nice layman-friendly summary of their findings.

I've noticed this mentioned in a number of places since the IPCC issued their 2013 report a few weeks ago.
For example in this article from a few weeks ago:
Eric Holthaus - The Atlantic
They said the problem was that you left your AC on, ie: it's a purely local phenomenon.
Seriously though, they did answer it. From:
IPCC Working Group I
In particular the summary available here:
http://www.climatechange2013.org/ima...d27Sep2013.pdf
(warning: the summary is 35 pages)
their answer is: "Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any
preceding decade since 1850" (page 3)
(see figure SPM.1, page 27)
They also chart it by year, where any one particular interval may be up or down but the trend is apparent.
Interesting note for Columbus Day: the reason so many explorers in the 16th century were unable to find the Northwest Passage is that they started looking 500 years too early.

It's a shame this topic became political along the way. It's something with the potential to affect us all. It's important that policy makers have good science to base their decisions upon. All the research gets spun by both sides so that the voting public (who doesn't understand the science anyway) doesn't have a chance either.
I will say this though: burying your head in the sand and believing that humans can't impact the environment is selling our species short.

I think that is probably the biggest issue. Many/most of the people pushing climate change are the people with the most to gain from climate change. Does that make them wrong? No, but it does make them an easy target.
Also, not directly related, but I get tired of all the tree huggers screaming we need to save the whales while drinking water out of plastic bottles by the truckload, and having wind generators shut down because some birds were dumb enough to fly into them. Yes, I like birds, but if we are about to melt our planet primarily because of fossil fuels then the birds will be dead anyway.

LOL civil - I have just moved to 'tree-hugger' central and some of these guys are truly nuts. That being said, for the most part the, from what I can see up here the rank and file are 'trying' to do the 'right thing' without making a federal case about it.
The fact of climate change, or global warming, or whatever label you want to put on it, is a fact. You can look at the historical reference and see the impact of man on the climate. The issues come up when you start trying to extrapolate that evidence from the historical record to predict the future course. The first point of contention is - is climate change negatively effecting the planet, or humanity, to a point where steps need to be taken to attempt to slow or change the climate. The second point of contention comes up after you have made the assumption that climate change has a negative effect on the planet or humanity - and that is how best to go about attempting to slow or change the climate.
I think all the science I have seen takes the first point as fact - where it gets dicey is with what do you do with that information. Some science says that it is already too late - and we are fucked. Some think that there is no problem and that this is just normal fluctuations, and over a longer time horizon will be shown to be just a blip. Some think the only possible solution is the elimination of the use of fossil fuels. It goes on and on.
My approach - take it all with a grain of salt. I try and do the 'right thing' whenever I can - I recycle almost anything I can (mainly because they charge me more for 'trash' than recycling), I don't cut down trees (the clear cuts up here are pretty disturbing to look at-but I still buy lumber when I need it and enjoy my big house), I try and use public transportation when I can (it's actually really, really good here in Portland - but I still drive my SUV most days), and whenever I can I try and reduce my electrical use at home (yet my computer is sitting at home at the ready for me).
I don't know what the answer is - but the guys saying that we need to do 'something' sound more right to me than the other guys. And doing the things above make sense to me - it's no skin off my ass, so why not take these steps? Am I a hypocrite? yeah probably, I could do more - but I sure as hell could be doing less.dex71 liked this post

A statement from the IPCC on climate change that only focuses on climate change in the last 2000 years.
