A cover is a hat.
And I thought Germans were anal.

Re: Hey DG!
It's not German, it's military. And it's not anal, it's a practical necessity of the job. Organizing the usage of language to be very specific and hierarchical, and universal across all users, is critical to the sort of communication that has to happen in military units.
In order to ensure that communication happens correctly when it needs to, the style is made a part of the culture. You don't just use language that way when it's necessary, you use it that way all the time so that you don't have to worry about when 'necessary' starts.
[I'm not a Marine, and would be happy to have a Marine offer further insight]
So if the correct usage is "cover", then "cover" it is. I'm fine with them using language the way they need to inside their organization, though I'd hope they'd be willing to accept that their way of using language isn't necessarily the best way outside.
I still think it's a bullshit issue though. Uniforms are important, but they also change. I imagine that the beret had an interesting history in the US military, too. If the new design was SS-style Nazi death heads, or something that was overtly racist, or religious, then I'd care. But it's the current style vs some new style that looks like an old style. It's a fashion thing. I'm not a Marine. Why the fuck should I care?

Don't worry; they'll keep the old hatmets in the gold ball atop the flagpost with the lighter and the knife.

It's funny that when it comes to the decisions that resulted in the capture of Bin Laden, the same people were claiming that the President wasn't the one responsible. Now that their hats are supposedly in danger, the President is in complete control of every minor decision that takes place within the armed forces.
