And yet i asked him what his definition of living is so we could discuss it. I even mentioned what a stupid argument it was as well. So basically by what standards are we applying but wait i think i even said that. Yeah pretty sure i did. lol

    Sure, that's only fair.
#1: Unlimited growth would certainly require unlimited resources, right? If not, then you're going to have to keep reducing the resources per person until they're infinitesimal.
#2: Assuming that resources are limited then, there's a maximum population that can be supported or we face #1.

    Done. Your turn.

In the context of this thread, the entire prospect seems pretty retarded to me.

As a mental exercise, or a sci-fi "what if" question, I suppose it's an interesting thing to consider.

Certainly we'd be doing ourselves a favour if we as a society thought a little more closely about population densities that are significantly greater than anything we currently have. People are already doing that, and have been doing it for a while. For example: Arcologies aren't a new idea.

But even though fore-thought (which in this case is a fancy word for 'speculation') can be useful, there is a real-world problem with that sort of speculation: structures don't continue to scale. It's an engineering reality that you can't just take a structure like, say, Singapore and then impute a 7-billion-person agglomeration by...

    - considering the population of Singapore (5 million)
    - dividing that into 7 billion (1400)
    - multiplying by the area of Singapore (700 km^2)

... and conclude that 980,000 square kilometres isn't that much bigger than the 700,000 square kilometres of Texas and so as long as people are willing to tuck in a bit we should tell Rick Perry to start sending out invitations tomorrow.

Yes, yes... if we use the density of New York City we don't even have to tell everyone that they can't bring everything they own.

But this is the sort of analysis that is Grade A retarded. No one has ever tried to supply a structure that big with water (do ya think water might be an issue in Texas?). No one has ever had to deal with the heat that would be generated. No one has ever designed or tested a transportation system that can serve the needs of such a city. No one has ever figured out how to deal with the effluent stream of waste that would be created. This paragraph could have a hundred more "uh ohs" and still not cover all the issues we know would be a problem - and we still haven't covered the issues we have no idea about. Building enough condos in Texas for 7 billion immigrants (*heh* you thought you had problems with Mexicans? Wait til India and China show up) would create problems no one could imagine.

Structures don't continue to scale. I've seen, first hand, the infrastructure that New York City uses to supply itself with water. Viewing it scrambles your brain. It's... insane. Building 700 New York Cities adjacent to each other isn't the sort of thing that anyone in their right mind can imagine how to do.

Could it be done? Maybe. But it can't be done with the technology and structures we use today.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here, and speculate in a new way: Anyone who says that it's a FACT that the entire population of the world could live in Texas is retarded.

    Cheers,

We will never run out of resources as a human race here on earth. We will kill each other off before it ever gets to that point. Maybe if you figure out the solution to keeping humans from killing each other, just to take something they want, then you might have a chance. Take a look at the genesis(beginning) and you have one human kill another human because he wanted to be better. Why, because the resources are limited and we kill to take out the competition. Sure, there is amazing technology that reduces the resources needed but who will bother when we can just wipe out a country and take theirs.

No, he actually killed him because he was jealous of him.

This is a very good point.

Yes, but before we kill each other, we'll wipe out more habitats for farming and mining, we'll damage more of our environment, and we'll generally make the earth a worse place. But then, yes, the problem may correct itself with a whole hell of a lot of death.
