There are plenty of small business ISPs around. You don't have to use the big boys. I worked at a small ISP for several years. We had faster speeds and better customer service (not even comparable on that one) and we were even cheaper than the big boys. And we were not the only one in the area either. There were three independent ISPs. I am still in touch with people that work there and they are rolling out fiber to the premise in a lot of places you would not expect to find it too. You don't automatically have to use the big companies. If a locally owned and operated ISP was available and you went with one of the big guys, no one wants to hear you bitch about bad service and price raises every six months.
Also, this is a result of the local monopolies that were granted to get cable TV rolled out in the 70s. If you forced them to allow CLECs like is required in the phone industry there could be competition in those local markets. The CLEC model has been good for the phone industry. There is no reason to think that could not work in cable as well.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.
