Re: Damnit Florida, this nonsense has got to stop.
Yeah, I drove through a town like that on my way to and from college. But I drove THROUGH that town.
This town in Florida somehow extruded a tendril of itself half a mile down a county route and then along a 0.2 mile segment of a state highway which was then re-limited to 55 from 65. The map of the town looks like a gerrymandered voting district. In two years they wrote 12,698 tickets - and apparently no one can say where all the money went.
This is an entirely other level of bullshit than I've ever seen before. Maybe that shit is common where you are, but it made me wince.
Cheers,

Shady, I have the up most respect for what law enforcement does but I've never been a fan (to say the least) of how they (I've yet to see a department or agencies do it in a honorable way consistently) give out tickets... Hide, witness a group of individual break the law, selectively (and possibly discriminate) pick one of the law breakers to pursue, letting the rest get away... Very shameful. Again I have the up most respect for *what* law enforcement does, but for speeding tickets, very shoddy.
Like take my hour commute to my campus every day (90‰ on the freeway), I see some of the craziest drivers on the south side of my treak, but I've never once in driving that route, twice a day, for near 5 years, have seen a speed trap on the south side, always North side, near the campus, and they always setup right around popular class arrival times (when I am heading home, I see them on the opposing side, slithering into place)... I'd not care if it was both sides (North and south) but they so blatantly target college commuters... I really have else many crazy mofos on the business side of town (south)... Bah
Whole system could be automated for $6-$50 per car, you travel too fast on a road, get a ticket in the mail.

This is how it's done in Germany. I get about one every two months. Most are €10-€20. The worst I have ever gotten was €92. That was for double the limit in a construction zone at four A.M. on the way back from Amsterdam.
The ticket comes in the mail with the picture of you speeding, a description of the where and when, and a bank slip for to pay them. You fill that out and give it to your bank and they wire transfer the money. Any speeding over 20% of the limit gets you a point against your license. 12 points in a year or 18 points in two years results in a suspension of your license for 30 days; again all automated. You can get points for other violations as well. I prefer this system since it frees up police officers to deal with actual crimes.
I once got a ticket in Dickinson Texas for 71 in a 70. I was pissed off but it was so much easier to pay it than to fight it.

I'll give you two more that have a long known history as speed traps...Woodbranch and Patton Village. Hwy 59 about 40 miles N.E. of Houston. Here's my take on it if a town has streets that directly intersect the main lanes of a highway then stopping speeders is a public service to that community because crossing a hwy with cars traveling at 70 to 80 mph can be a daunting proposition esp if you're pulling a trailer. But the towns listed above come nowhere close to meeting that criteria, their just lining their pockets.
