Im fortunate that i live in an area where a vast majority of the teachers in the local public schools are well grounded in reality. A lot of them grew up here and know the families of kids in school today. I might have shared this story before but here it goes. My son Tyler we bullied in Jr high. A group of kids started picking on him in the 8th grade. Hes a good natured kid, GREAT sense of humor and really likes to avoid confrontation. He made me aware of the bullying after it had gone on for a while. I told him to follow the school protocol and report it. After 3 times of doing this with no results i told him to kick the shit out of the kid the next time he started shit.

    He did just that.

The school was forced to suspend both of them. My son for 2 or 3 days (cant remember exactly), the bully for 5.... which actually surprised the hell out of me. When i picked him up, i chatted with the guidance staff, which all said, even though they have a program in place that discourages "fighting back" against a bully and reporting it instead, they have virtually no recourse for when it is reported. They wont even confront the parents of the bully for fear of litigation against them for harassment! They were actually sad they "had" to suspend my son at all.

Anyway, he never got bullied again and even stood up for his friends that he saw getting bullied once he found his own inner strength. But according to these "anti bully" programs, he is supposed to just hold it in and let someone else take care of the problem. Personally, i find that far less healthy than drawing a line in the sand and bitch slapping anyone who crosses it. Two things are gained by that. The bullied kid builds confidence, and the bully learns respect. BOTH of which are sadly lacking in school today.

Doesn't anyone else find it odd that one student created all that carnage and no other students rose up to take him down? Something is amiss when a school full of youth are so docile that they would allow another kid to cut more than his first target.

My brother growing up was similar. My parents moved a bit when he was young so he was always the new kid who got bullied. Not to mention he was a lot smaller than the other kids. Little did they know that even though my dad was a pastor who taught us to avoid fighting when possible, he was also a championship boxer who taught me and my brother how to kick some ass if the need for it arose.

So my brother was in sixth grade and this bully who pushed my brother every day pushed him one too many times and my brother dropped him with a single punch to the face, knocking a tooth or two out. Well the kid decided he didn't have enough and brought a knife to school the next day to start something. My brother ran and told the teacher that this kid had a knife and was looking to start something. The teacher took the knife and said "you can have this back after class" and then my brother gets suspended for defending himself. What a joke, kid brings a weapon to school and gets little more than a small slap on the wrist

Re: Mass stabbing at a High School

I remember being in highschool doing a physics experiment for a class out in a parking lot. Car comes blazing down the lot at high speed and barely misses me despite having been able to see me for several hundred yards. I flip the car the double bird. The car turns back around, and the driver's boyfriend gets out wanting to fight me. I was down for that. Before anything happened, my teacher walks up and finds out what happens. The boyfriend gets a suspension, and I got told that as a very smart person I should hold myself to higher standards. Such slap. Much wrist.

Re: Mass stabbing at a High School

As far as I recall (and it was only 6ish years ago I finished HS), both parties got suspended but it was just 2-3 days. Oh and that could happen multiple times too, had a friend who got in a lot of fights in elementary and middle school, never got kicked out just suspended for a few days each time.

As for no-one trying to stop the kid, no I don't find it odd. I see it as a chaotic situation and don't see it odd at all that people would be more concerned either with survival or helping friends/classmates then trying to take down someone (assuming they even knew which person it was). I also haven't read many stories out of there to know how chaotic is was or wasn't.
