Re: Nazi America.
But it's this kind of mentality that leads to the heavy handed bullshit that we see every day now. Cops beating people in the streets for no reason other than they can get away with it. Cops with full riot gear, dog, beanbag shotguns, tazers, and pepper spray shooting a homeless guy in the back with an AR. The law says you don't HAVE to show your ID. You don't even have to carry ID. So why should we allow them to harass us by doing so voluntarily?
Ninety-nine percent of the time, if a cop asks to see my ID more than likely I'm going to go "sure" just like you say. But if I decide I don't WANT to show him... that's my lawful choice to do so.

And 99.9% of the time neither do I. But I also know that I have the right to simply say "no". Why give up your rights to make it easier to get through the day without getting harassed? What other rights are you willing to give away just because it's the easier path? Where do you draw the line, and where do THEY draw the line?

Re: Nazi America.
I don't see how showing ID correlates with bad cops. Cops that beat the shit out of people cause they can need to be removed from the force.
I'm all for people defending their rights, but what does it hurt them asking someone who's doing something that can be conceived as suspicious They aren't copying your info, they aren't taking it, and they aren't asking you to empty your pockets. They're making sure you're not some freak show that's gunna kill anyone.
With that said, I'm more sick of these youtubers who go around purposefully trying to provoke cops than I am of what the cop does.Quote

Re: Nazi America.
This is effectively the same thing as requiring you to register your identity and location as often as the police require it. Given the opportunity, they can (ie: will) enter all that data into a Citizen Tracking Database. Like, requiring you to show your ID isn't any different than requiring you to swipe your ID - it's cheaper that way, citizen. Oh, we're no longer issuing the old, cumbersome, drivers licenses. The new licenses have RFID tags. It's so much more convenient for you to not have to pull out your wallet whenever we demand it, and we can move all the money we used to spend on old-style magnetic strip readers and spend it on... uh... Advanced Non-lethal Crowd Persuasion Equipment. At the bottom of my slippery slope of paranoia is a geo-coded database that provides very good predictive analysis by individual.
"Hey, citizen. Last week you weren't at any of your usual Tuesday night locations. What's up with that?"
So far, the biggest problem with the 21st century is that almost everyone still thinks it's 1990.
Yep.

Re: Nazi America.
Especially the ones that THINK they know their rights and have no clue.
What's the harm in them asking? No harm at all. It's also no harm for me to say "sorry... you don't need to see my ID." Because it's my right to do so. In some states it's my right to carry a sidearm in open sight as well without having a cop harass me over it. We have a lot of rights that we simply give away just because it's easy to do so. Myself, I don't understand how people like MT and you are willing to do that just because. If it's the law, then it's the law and we have to do so. If it's NOT the law, and in fact the law states clearly that you do NOT have to show your ID, then there you go. You don't have to. And cops that try to bully you into doing so are the ones in the wrong; not the person saying "no, sir. I will not show you my ID."
I have never refused a cop's request for ID or refused to answer a question they have asked. But I reserve the right to do so and expect, should the circumstance come up, not to be harassed and threatened with jail time because the cop either does not know the law (a lot more common than you might guess) or simply thinks he can make the law whatever he wants it to be.
