    Re: Nazi America.

    Cops aren't paid to interpret. They are paid to enforce the letter of the law. JUDGES are paid to interpret. If I shoot someone in self defense, I fully expect the cops to take my ass to jail. They aren't paid to determine if what I did was self defense or not. That's up to the judge and possibly a jury. Unfortunately cops don't know the laws they are paid to enforce. Even simple ones they should know full well. As a for instance.......

    <story time>
    I had a dodge stealth rt twin turbo... without a front plate bracket. And I wasn't going to drill holes in my car. So I got pulled over repeatedly for not having a front license plate. I decided that I would not put a plate on and I told every cop that. I also threw in a bluff. "AND I've been told by two state cops, and a few county officers that I don't NEED one because it is a pre-2000 car without a bracket from out of state and it's never HAD a bracket."

    Every cop backed down except one that continued to stop me and finally after about the sixth time I just told him outright "I'm not doing it, if you are going to ticket me, do it. I will see you in court and if the judge agrees with you I will pay the fine and put the plate on my car." He went back to his car and made me sit there for a HALF HOUR. That's fine... I can wait. He finally came back and literally said "screw it. I don't feel like messing with it any more. I can't find anywhere it says you HAVE to have a front plate so you're free to go. But if I stop you for something else I'm going to ticket you for it." "Thanks a lot officer. Have a nice day."

    When I got my Camaro SS it too did not have a front bracket. So I continued to play stupid. I got stopped a couple times again and continued with the "but I was told I didn't" story. And they continued to look confused and let me go.

    Why do they not know that you HAVE to, in illinois, have a front plate? They should know this and know that there is no "grandfather clause". I just didn't want to drill holes in my car and they look a lot better without the front plate. If a cop wants to ticket me I'll take the ticket and pay it. Then I'll put the plate on. But until then... not so much.

    When cops start INTERPRETING things they are either ignorant of the letter of the law or they believe themselves above the law and need to be removed.

    Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

    Nice example with the front plate. I got pulled over in PA with my chevelle for that exact reason. He simply would not believe FL doesn't have front tags.

    So did he get in trouble for not showing ID, or for filming? I know some states have laws against filming police officers, which I feel is pretty damn stupid. If it was for filming, not in one of those states, and it was in public then that shouldn't be an issue. IIRC even two-party consent states allow filming in public since you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

    Even in the two party consent states it's not illegal to film someone. Where it gets sticky is the audio recording which usually runs afoul of wire-tapping laws. Illinois was bad for this for a long long time. They would arrest people on trumped up charges and threaten them. Then if the person took it to court they would drop the charges before it would go to trial so that the laws wouldn't get challenged. It finally got decided here (might have been a fed case actually come to think of it) that you could film police in public doing their jobs any time you want as long as you aren't interfering with their ability to do their job.
