It's a shitty situation. There isn't really a clear answer.
On the one hand, we don't want to turn the kids away, but on the other, just openly accepting them could put many more in danger. The trip from South America isn't a safe one, especially when the coyotes are stuffing trailer trucks with humans. Increasing the demand for them wouldn't fare too well for their extra passengers. The way we handle this could have a multitude of unintended consequences.Red_Lizard2 liked this post

Pretty much agree with this. It seems cruel to send them back but at the same time it isn't really feasible to let them stay in the U.S. either.
Something I was listening to (might have been Bill Maher podcast) was mentioning that Mexico is having problems processing asylum requests because they don't have enough people to well...process them. Giving the source, hard to say if that is true, but if it is it might help a bit. Not that Mexico is exactly the safest place right now granted.

Not one place in the world is safe for a kid that´s all alone. You´ve got sickos, rapists, pervs, junkies, smugglers, dealers, murderers etc etc etc that´ll take advantage of a child. Anywhere in Europe, anywhere in Asia, anywhere in Africa, anywhere in North America anywhere in Latin America. Anyway, the future is bleak for these kids. The vast majority of them will be poor regardless of where they end up; and being poor sucks anywhere in the world. They´ll be exposed to basically every fucked up thing in society today.

Well...we´ve talked about this with friends and family before...we basically live in a war zone...I believe we all might suffer some form of PTSD. It is definitely not close to being normal living conditions regardless of how many body guards one may have or how many armored vehicles one might have or how secure the compound is. Shit, it´s basically being a prisoner in your own little green zone.
I mean...a normal family should have a car (not an armored vehicle), a house (not a secure compound), a neighborhood (not checkpoints at every street corner) and maaybe a community security guard (not permanent guards on duty in their posts inside your "compound")
I´ve got a couple of friends that are married to a scottish and a dutch guy. They all came down for Christmas and these guys had their jaws wide open all the way from the airport to the house. It is definitely something else. It really looks like Iraq or Afghanistan. Extreme poverty on one side and on the other side of the the street: Mansions....and a fuckload of private security (contractors).
You guys should come down here sometime...you have no idea
