Re: Do you approve of Israel?
Sorry Trigger, i dont really think this question is the other side of the same coin. Commander did not ask if we approved a "Palestinian State", if he did then i could see your question being the antithisis.
Why noy ask if we support the Kadima or Likud parties of Israel?
I think you'll find most of us support a Palestinian state, but dissaprove of Hamas being at the helm.

Now.....now here's the good question. Do we approve of a country created by the ruling superpowers of the last world war? Would we accept the same creation of another state this way anywhere else in the world? Like if the UN came in and said taiwan is an independent state? Or tibet? Or chechnya? Or separate tribal areas of the middle east and persia? Or the qinxiang province in china?
No. We'd say that's crazy, and a violation of national sovereignty. It'd be one thing if these lands were part of occupied territory of the war of the time (part of germany/japan) in wwii, or part or korea, or iraq, or afghanistan. Recall the arguments made for letting to northern iraqi kurds separate into another state to balance politics and peace early in the iraqi reconstruction.
But...that's imperialism. That's the "winner" writing history and borders. But....so long as its in the occupied territories of the war as above in the goal of permanently adressing issues that led to the war itslef or may aid in recovery of the affected peoples....it's a justified imperialsm.
But israel....was created as a response to the holocaust, with land being taken away from countries that had neaar nothing to do with wwii as a whole. Merely some lines in a religious book that specify where jews live leads to the creation of a state? Would the same favor be done for muslims? Or buddists? Or wiccans?
So.....I don't thing the way israel was created was a very well thought out idea. BUT that was 60 years ago, generations have passed, millions of people are there, and the situation is what it is.
We can't undo what was done when the state was created. But....israel can't continue to make settlements and isolate their populus from the local inhabitants to protect their own voting blocs. Israel is treating the palestinians like the native americans....fprcing them into isolated reservations, and impeding their ability to be a part of the functioning world around them.
None of that, however has a god damn thing to do with the idealogy that violence and bombings and martyrs and religous extremism somehow are part pf the resistance or solution. If the palestinians and 3rd parties in the region would calm the fuck down and grow up, arrrest violent people, turn over terrorist leaders, and play ball....then there would never be walls. Never be check points. Never be war.
Imagine if the us native americans acted like paletinians, or had elements within their reservations like hamas or islamic jihad or hezbollah.
We's erase them from existence, permanently. Without question. Because civilized society and rule of law are incompatible with bullshit like hamas.
Note how that last flotilla submitted to be boarded, towed to ashdod, inspected, and soon will be distributed to gaza. Because that's respecting the rule of law and acting responsibly. Because they actuallly want to help gazans. Unlike the turks who wanted to be on tv and get shot so they could be martyrs. Nutballs like that are why blockades, walls, checkpoints, and trigger fingers exist in israel. So blame the idiots. Not the response.

Re: Do you approve of Israel?
I respect Israel's right to exist.
At the same time I think the Palestinians, Hamas or not, should have their place too.
Israel needs to be the one who comes first with tough concessions ie. stop building new settlements.
And they need to do it wholeheartedly w/o expecting tough concession immediately from the Palestinians. That will come later.

Re: Do you approve of Israel?
+1
though we'd be really lucky if that happened i think
as it is Israel really has nothing to gain from the Palestinians other than peace... i'm not sure if that's enough for a lot of Israeli hardliners
compromises (the name of the game) will/would be very difficult to come by from both sides, hence why this conflict has been going on since at least the first world war
