06-22-10, 09:27 PM #1Gun Education: In School's?
So our state is doing their campaigning again, and one of the candidates for Attorney General says she wants gun safety classes in schools. I find this uncalled for, and should only be taken as an option unless if they (the legal aged) want to get a rifle or a pistol license. Although the saftey classes in schools should be an option, made my the parent(s) of the child. We do have something similar to this already in force, called D.A.R.E. Teaches all sorts of things to make children safe.
Below is the quote and link to the situation.
HARTFORD, Conn. —
The Republican endorsed candidate for
Connecticut attorney general is advocating firearms training to be taught to kids in schools, in scout groups and in summer camps.
Avon attorney Martha Dean says if elected she would explore expanding gun accident prevention programs and rifle club teams in schools.
So what do you guys think about the idea of gun safety classes in schools? Keep this mistake in mind too.

I'm for it at the college level, when everyone can buy a weapon legally. Otherwise the only gun safety that should be taught at the school level (and this would be say elementary/middle school) is what to do if you see/find/w.e. a gun (but not training on how to use it and all that jazz).

God your stupid...
Its not training on "how to use it" They dont set up targets so kids can shoot good scores.
I am one thousand percent all for gun safety in elementary schools. Kids should learn the difference VERY YOUNG between real guns, movie guns, and toy guns. They should know all the safety features on guns, and KNOW they are not toys to be messed with. It's not college kids shooting themselfs accidentaly cuz they find a gun in their parents room. Its elementary kids who think its "cool" to have a gun (movies/games/toy guns) and are never taught the difference.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES PLEASE put this in schools. Untimately it should be the parents job, but lets face it, parents today fucking suck.

As an extra curricular activity after school it would be ok, but I don't think that this needs to be in the classroom.
In a lot of states you can buy a rifle or shotgun at 18 and only pistols are restricted to 21 years of age so I can see it as an after school activity for High Schoolers and at the College level, but they can take classes now and many are offered by the states. Our state has shooting/hunting safety courses as well as plenty of places where folks can learn to shoot anything they want.
Using time for this instead of math, science, grammar, etc? Fail.
