Senate Bill Gives Obama, Feds Control Of Internet
source
Keeping with the Obama big government script, a bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to grant the federal government “absolute power” to shut down the internet and the president the authority to seize control of it in the name of national security.
Under the law (Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010) companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms selected by the U.S. government "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Those that don’t comply will be punished.
The government will have the power to force private companies to participate in “information sharing” with the feds and the authority to monitor the “security status” of private sector websites, broadband providers and other internet components, under the measure introduced by “independent Democrat” Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
Yet another new government agency (National Center for Cybersecuirty and Communications—NCCC) will be created to police the industry and any company that “relies on” the internet, the telephone system or any other component of the “information infrastructure” will be subject to its command. The new NCCC will have no less than two deputy directors and liaison officers to the Defense, Justice and Commerce departments as well as the Director of National Intelligence.
Technology experts worry that arming the president with an internet “kill switch” could be used to silence free speech under the pretext of a national emergency. Lieberman points out that his measure is essential because the nation’s “economic security, national security and public safety” are at risk from “enemies” that include “cyber-warriors, cyber-spies, cyber-terrorists and cyber-criminals."
Thank you Democrats....

There is absolutely NOTHING that could come from this that could even be considered good.
IF, big if, IF this bill passes, say goodbye to TPG. Maybe not immediately, but it starts with governement control for "emergencies" Then it starts the regulation.
Ask yourself this, how hard did the democrats push to get ESRB ratings on games? You have to be 17 to buy them...how long do you think this site will last letting kids younger than 17 comment on video games, and discuss the topics we discuss?
This could get ugly...

Is it November yet?
These people need to be stopped. Remember when Bush was ridiculed for requesting info from the phone companies in the name of National security? This is ten-times more intrusive.....
Shit like this makes a veto-proof Congress more likely every day......keep it up libs.

Re: Senate Bill Gives Obama, Feds Control Of Internet
Two things that come to mind about this... First is enforcement. Which will be the task of which department? No matter, ultimately it will be our governments responsibility. and I'm sure it will recieve all the due diligence required. Just look how they manage homeland security as an example, except it won't be your shoes they make you remove. You seriously need to consider all that you and other people use the internet for, other than playing games.
Second; and this ties in with Krakers comment; if this is as I suspect, a part of the U.N.'s initiative to wrest away the supposed U.S. control of the internet, then this will be the first step in removing Americans right to free speech over the internet. You can expect a censoring effort similar to China, where ALL internet traffic is monitored and subject to extreme censorship. Even GOOGLE could'nt operate in China because; depending on the direction of the POLITICAL winds; the rules changed on a nearly daily basis.
In my opinion, this is a bad move, and I'd feel the same if this were a Republican proposal. History is written by the Victors, and so is political correctness. The party in majority will dictate to the minority, and when the right to freely speak out is made politically unacceptable in accordance to the Goverment du Jour, or worse, a foriegn entity with no responsibility to the American people, then we as Americans will have lost our most prized possesion. By the way, in China, none of this would have been allowed to be posted, and I would likely be arrested.Last edited by RagunCajun; 06-23-10 at 08:19 AM.
