Republican Eric Cantor: Deficit Hypocrite
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor admits that extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy will increase the deficit, but he supports them anyway—even though he opposes extending unemployment insurance and small-business aid for the same reason.

Re: Republican Eric Cantor: Deficit Hypocrite
Interesting? Eh, I would use the word unsurprising. Typical double-talk. The Bush tax cuts are easily responsible for the greatest percentage of the deficit right now, and they want to keep that, which makes the deficit worse, while denying unemployment benefits. The Republican mantra seems to be, "let the rich get richer, and fuck the poor/middle-class."

Re: Republican Eric Cantor: Deficit Hypocrite
Its because Repubs believe that cutting taxes for business owners creates jobs.
Its because Dems believe that money from the Govt (taxes) Create Jobs.

Nancy is right that it injects money into the economy quickly. The problem is that it runs out and then another check is needed.
I don't oppose extensions of unemployment, but do agree with the Republicans that it would be nice to see spending cut elsewhere to fund it. Applying the same login to tax cuts would be logical.

Re: Republican Eric Cantor: Deficit Hypocrite
Fov - if you want to stereotype everyone negatively, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I know that you make that statement to be incendiary though. But it is silly. Should we make up a bunch of negative tripe about Dems?
I also seem to recall the issue over extending unemployment benefits as far as the Repubs were concerned being; use some of the stimulus money to fund those extensions since it had already been appropriated and much was sitting unused. So, they were not interested in denying unemployment benefits, their point of contention was how to fund those extensions. I see nothing wrong with paying attention to where the money comes from.Last edited by Alundil; 08-04-10 at 09:11 AM.

Re: Republican Eric Cantor: Deficit Hypocrite
Sorry, I should have said, "The Republican mantra in Congress seems to be..." The thread was about a congressman, so I figured that much would be assumed. I wasn't trying to pigeonhole all Republicans.
A lot of the Republican nonsense about not extending unemployment benefits was because they felt is would make people lazy and not give them an incentive to look for work. As people in the other thread can attest to, that is certainly not the case for most people. Unemployment benefits are also helpful with stimulating the economy, much more so than things like tax cuts. Included in the bills they tried to stop is also aid for state and local governments, which are running in the red, and unless they get relief, more people will be unemployed or taxes will go up.
Another reason was that it would add too much to the deficit. A whole $30 billion. And these are also the same people who voted for the unpaid Bush tax cuts, which are a huge reason our deficit is so high now. They did propose paying for it from the stimulus, but only for two months and not through November like the Democrats wanted. The money earmarked in the stimulus is there for a reason, though. Why didn't they propose to pay for it with money currently being spent in Iraq and Afghanistan? Oh, that's right, because they are hypocrites. Complain about deficits that they are responsible for.
