The common people were led to believe this sure, but religion is not to blame for this. Power drove these wars. As all wars. I cannot name a single war that was not the result of power. Whether it was the expansion of greed or the rising up to break the cycle of oppression. But I truly can not think of any country scale wars that were purely surrounded in religious dogma. None.

Edit: Usually these wars were the cause of both reasons at once. listed above. Oppression and Greed.

Second edit: many were persecuted for their beliefs. This was just one easy way to cluster a group -- to create propaganda. WWII was not about Jewish people (bad example). The point is the war was created by the disparity and oppression created by various power factions and the Versailles treaty. Every other war starts this way and gets mingled with religion, faction, and nationality.

So answer the question, what war has had its casus belli be religious in nature?

Show me an armed conflict that was caused by religion. I can think of three throughout the thousands of years of human history (I'm sure I'm forgetting some but hey...)

So let's talk about the driving factors of these wars? (Wow we are so off topic guys, I think this needs it's own thread) Is it about Islam, or is it about territory?
