they have been ordered to stop "distributing" the software...so no more updates....limewire is still active. Limewire did not upload files to itself. Its a P2P interface...it is...bittorrent so to speak...As long as users still log on...the database will continue to grow

And I'll reiterate the warning that White said. Lets just discuss the news story and not your own personal habits.

They were actually ordered to do more then that. They were told that they had to find a way to cripple the "legacy software" (copies that have already been downloaded) and render them useless. Probabbly though forced patch that basically kills the software.

Page 14 of the injunction touches on this:

I think its a better way to distribute open source software. Today I had to get BackTrack for my Computer Forensics class. I started the download through the direct link and it said it was going to take 4+ hours so I decided to use their torrent link to see if that was faster...1.6gb within 20 minutes. Torrents do come in handy sometimes...

Absolutely torrents are incredibly useful for getting large files to a lot of people without having massive server storage and bandwidth costs. Plus it is more reliable and stable.

Many big game developers use it openly to distribute patches (Blizzard and the Project Reality team for example) because it's way easier and cheaper. I get all sorts of *nix distros from it and a lot of my IT classes have programs/virtual machines/images that are available via torrent.

It's a little sad that the torrents get painted as something that is only good for copyright infringement.

The potential problem that I see with that would be making sure that the correct version is being distributed. If provide your own downloads, you can make sure that only the most recent version is downloaded, or at least, you put the most recent version at the top. Is there any way to control this when distributing through torrents?
