Depleted Uranium

I'd like to find who did the studies and slap them. All depleted Uranium means is that the rarer isotopes of Uranium have been removed from the bulk of the uranium. It's still the same radioactive material it was before. Whoever said it was magically safe should be drawn and quartered.

My understanding is that the uranium has a coating or jacket that shields the radiation when it's in your clip or belt or whatever, but when you fire it, the the impact produces dust and particulate matter that is now an exposure risk.

I am sure they did some studies and determined that there was little to no risk in handling the DU ammunition as long as you weren't shot with it, and now we are finding out that was incorrect.

I know this will sound crass but the military tends took look at soldiers as expendable. I'm sure there was knowledge that this was harmful yet they tend to view it as an occupational hazard. Obviously they feel that the lives lost are worth what this ammo brings to the table. Otherwise they wouldn't have kept this a secret.

Wouldn't that classify depleted uranium rounds as a type of chemical warfare?

Crass or not I agree. I have several family members that are, or were, in the military. Soldiers are not much different than other military equipment when you get down to it.

I am sure there are those that knew that there was a high potential for the results we are seeing, but as always I am sure at the time the reward was greater than the risk.

Yes but it wasnt "intended" to be from what I read. I have an uncle who is very lucky to not suffered these consequences as he was a gunner on a bradley. The problem sounds like it is worse not from handling the rounds but by going close to targets hit by the rounds. The article civil posted made it seem that they were using this waste product because it had properties that made it an effective armor piercing round. It seems they didnt care that it was still radioactive. And I would agree with triggers statement that the military sees soldiers as an expendable piece of equipment. Problem is that equipment requires disability when you screw it up.

No it would not fit the catagory. It has a side effect and a pretty shitty one at that but a chemical weapon has one purpose and that is kill by breaking down parts of the body. The purpose of the du is penatration into armored vehicles or bunkered buildings. Due to that it removes it from the list. DU weapons have been around alot longer then some think it has. The most common use that i know of is 20, 25 and 30 mm armor piercing rounds.

I have no idea how many people have been around this stuff and i have many many times. The issue cant be with handling or many ordnance men would gone by now. It has to be something with the remains of shit thats been hit.
