The other crucial event that would play a role in the development of America was the arrival of Africans to Jamestown. A Dutch slave trader exchanged his cargo of Africans for food in 1619. The Africans became indentured servants, similar in legal position to many poor Englishmen who traded several years labor in exchange for passage to America. The popular conception of a racial-based slave system did not develop until the 1680's. The legend has been repeated endlessly that the first blacks in Virginia were "indentured servants," but there is no hint of this in the records. The inference was then made that blacks called servants must have had approximately the same status as white indentured servants. Such reasoning failed to notice that Englishmen, in the early seventeenth century, used the work servant when they meant slave in our sense, and, indeed, white Southerners invariably used servant until 1865 and beyond. No offence but I am very educated about US/AMERICAN history in fact its one of my favorite topics/subjects.

Also I like how you acaqate Slavery to the legalization of Marijuana.

It was straight forward, abolish Slavery. The southern states said no. Its cheap/free labor and it will kill us economically. They were basically told find other options. 5 years and hundred of thousands of deaths later. Slavery was abolished and the country started a lengthy reunification process.

The samething is going on today with Illegal Immigrants and labor. The only problem it is hardier to squash and the work in most cases they do is voluntarily. The issue the gov't isn't collecting taxes and revenue based on their labor and paying for basic social services.

I swear it seems like a good chunk of the people posting here are some mountain hill living anti goverment damn the man militia folks here.

seems like most people would prefer to hit the reset button so they could form their own perfect version of a governing body.

Then you should do some reading. The Civil War was about much more than slavery....it was about States Rights.

The Southern States believed it was their right to decide the slavery question, just as Cali believes that deciding that MJ should be legal. In both cases, the Feds put their foot down. The difference is that before the Civil War, the Feds had no right to put any foot down. The North winning provided the Feds with the power to completely over-rule the will of the people in an individual State.
