I was taught completely differently, and what I was taught makes sense logically (to me). Why would the lower classes care about slavery? A very small minority of Southern Whites owned slaves. I do not remember the exact statistics, but I know it was under 10%. The slave owners didn't care about states rights, they were afraid that congress would abolish slavery.

To get around congress abolishing slavery, the slave owners cried out that the issue of Slavery should be left up to the states, and used the Propaganda that the big, evil, Republican Government is encroaching on our state's rights to stir the non-slave owning majority.

Sorry, but I don't understand the logic of the non slave owners caring about slavery, and the Slave owners caring about states rights.

This whole post in kind of off topic, but I'd rather debate history than make fun of a bunch of crackpots.
You may find the info you refer to here Chronology on the History of Slavery 1619 to 1789 there's alot of census and statistics and many other why's and what for's.

It would play at least some role, Slave labor had a major impact on the southern economy. Why would they not care if slaves were freed?

Hell wasn't one of the big reasons for the Emancipation Proclamation to cripple the economy of the southern states that seceded?

The morality of slavery was the vehicle driven by politicians ambitious for power and fueled by economic greed.
This is a nice easy read. http://americancivilwar.com/kids_zone/causes.html

I agree, sort of. Lincoln didn't go to war because he wanted to free the slaves. The war was mainly about States' Rights, and slaves were a small part of that issue.

Top Five Causes of the Civil War

Either way you look at it, the South have nothing to be proud of.

That's a very Readers Digest blog and the causes were much more complex than their biased simplistic top five. I agree that slavery was nothing to be proud of but to say that it was the overriding cause for the war is naive.

So the South didn't care if they're economy got destroyed? I find it hard to believe slaves only played a small part when they were such a huge key to the economic success of southern states.

Of course they cared, I posted this link it was written for children so it's pretty easy to understand. The lack of fairness in trade and tax revenue on the north's behalf was the basis of the dispute. American Civil War Causes Kids Zone
