Re: Touching
I fail to see why this is touching. People love othe people over the entire planet and thats not touching. To use a phrase from the hippies "Make love not war" doesn't change society. It didn't then, doesn't now, and wont in the future. Even she says she doesn't know why there is a difference with being with someone and being married. So why file the lawsuit if you dont even have an answer for the very basics?
Don't look to me for the answer of why people get married the whole thing makes no sense to me but i have been for 15 years. I'm sure the conversation over it could come up with just as many cons as it does pros. In the end i wouldn't be married if she didn't feel the need to have the cerimony because thats what it boils down to.

It's touching because it's a heart felt love story.
There is a difference because she was denied her equal rights. Her marriage was legal and recognized by the state of New York. DOMA caused her to have to pay taxes you will never have to pay as a heterosexual married man. There is also a difference in that you are symbolically tied together in a marriage. Lots of people value that bond. Sometimes you can't describe things with words properly.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Re: Touching
I guess thats when my wifes statement of you have no heart comes into play.
I understand your points but she filed the lawsuit not you. If she cant come up with a way to discribe it then the lawsuit has no basis. I'm still waiting to see these added benefits of being married when it comes to tax time.

Say you die, your wife inherits everything you own per your will. Because you're legally married as far as DOMA is concerned she doesn't have to worry about inheritance taxes. This lady and her wife do not get that benefit. She had to pay steep inheritance taxes because of DOMA even though her marriage was lawful and recognized in the state of New York.

Re: Touching
Meer red tape that could have been alleviated by better planning. Just as an example in Florida if i sell you a car you have to pay tax on that amount. If i give it to you or sell it to you for less then $100 the tax is based of the blue book. If i sell it to you for 101 you pay 7.50 in taxes. I will have to check out the inheritance laws but i do believe everyone has to pay it but i could be wrong.
