Re: A mock slave auction?
I think the age group made the big difference. I remember in a middle school class all of the white blonde hair blue eyed kids were moved to one side of the room and the rest "sent to concentration camps" Different methods are effective to different learning styles. I see the point of the lesson, but with young kids, it will be missed and seen as an opportunity to make fun of classmates. Feeling up students... yeah that just screams misconduct.

Re: A mock slave auction?
at a different age it would be fine, but elementary school is no place for that. in high school i had a history teacher that was really big on demonstrations and class interactions to simulate certain conditions and to give a better understanding of what it was like. Ironically the one that sticks out the most was the time he wanted to show us what a slave boat was really like because no one in the class could wrap their heads around it. He layed out a rectangle on the ground that was only 5 feet wide and about 20 feet long, there were roughly 30 kids in the class, and had the whole class lay on the ground in this rectangle on our sides. He made us squish together until everyone fit in that rectangle, he then proceeded to teach the next 20 minutes of class while everyone was laying there. Ya I wont ever forget that lesson.
