    Throughout much of Europe, and several places in Asia, large segments of the population are atheist. How do you fit that into your hypothesis?

    Not exactly true. Europe on average has about an 18%* self proclaimed atheist population, about on par with the US, and Asia is a bit difficult to quantify. There are many overlaps of traditions/customs that cloud the definition of "religion". The percentage of non religious citizens of China for example could be anywhere from 80 to 30 percent (the data for this one is kind of dated taken from a 1993 study).

    That being said, a study that bolsters Non Seqs claim of lack of religion creating a vacuum waiting to be filled by "something else" would be interesting indeed.
