If my sister (the only person I love) were to become a vegetable, I would be fine with it. A person without a mind is just a husk and is no longer human. An insurance company would make the same decision. If there is a public option, then there would need to be those types of panels. Can't really have an insurance company without them.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

It is easy to say what you WOULD do, but my guess is when the situation actually presents itself to you I will bet that your thinking may be a bit different. This is just based on personal experience, so it may not apply according to some of you.

What I would do? When it was my brain dead grandmother on life support I was for pulling the plug. So, don't presume to know what I would do.

Re: Canadian death panel?
Just to clarify, no "government official" decided not to perform the surgery, it was the doctors themselves. So this is not comparable to an insurance company here deciding not to cover a surgery, and I know that's what you were trying to do here, Consultant. And it's dishonest. I wouldn't have argued against an insurance company here denying a surgery here if the doctor advised against it and the disease is a fatal one that is going to end the persons life very soon regardless. The problems come when the insurers deny treatment against the advice of doctors.

Re: Canadian death panel?
Absolutely true. Some people struggle with the decision as if there really is an alternative for death. I know when i was brought in when my father was possiblely dieing i knew what his wishes were and he knew i had no issue making the right call. Make no mistake its not a decision I or anyone else wants to do but when the time comes if your unlucky enough to be the one making the call you will gain at the very least a new perspective. It can be hard to remember the person is already dead and thats exactly what the are if the machines are doing all the work for them. Tragic without a doubt but you have to get past that part and do whats best for you and that is not spending every waking moment at a hospital staring at for all intensive purposes a corpse with a pulse.
