05-02-11, 07:36 PM #1War in Afghanistan
Since its a pain in the ass to sort through the comments on about 400 different topics in the OBL dead thread, something to centralize the Afghanistan stuff.
With the recent news, should we still be in Afghanistan? What should our primary mission in Afghanistan be? Can we make a democratic government work in Afghanistan? and any other questions you feel important to discuss.
Personally, as I've stated in the other thread, I have about as much hope of having a stable government in Afghanistan as I do for one in Somalia (which is like .001%). As for if we should be there, well we are kind of fucked either way imo. We either stay and likely it continues to drag on with no solution until we give up, or we leave and hope the place doesn't go to shit and force us back in a few years. If we stay, i think our main goal should be to try to get the people on "our side," and hopefully put a dent in the efforts for a terrorist group to try to infiltrate the country again when we eventually leave.
What is your opinion? (you can just quote from another thread if you want, as this is mainly to try to centralize a discussion on this one specific topic)

Re: War in Afghanistan
We have stayed there way longer than we should have. Of course, part of the reason is because a previous President of ours didn't think bin Laden was worth all the hub-bub and we invaded Iraq based on lies. We should have learned from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the quagmire they got stuck in, but we didn't, so we were doomed to repeat it. It's long past time to leave both countries and let them decide their fate.

Re: War in Afghanistan
For me, it's a double edge sword.
On the one hand, as far as I'm concerned, the War on 9/11 is over. All who were involved are dead, and better yet, the mastermind died at our hands. We got justice (if that is even possible), and a little revenge. Game over. We win.
Nation building has proven to be tough....if even possible. But, at the same time, it would be irresponsible for us to leave any country as unstable as either Iraq or The Stan, only to have to return in 10 years.....We have already shouldered the next generation with enough debt, the least we can do is not fuck this up any further than it already is.
We learned some important lessons when we pulled out the wrong way (giggity) in Vietnam. Mayhem ensued, and millions were killed and/or driven to slavery by the Khmer Rouge. We don't need that blood on our hands when we have the luxury of our own mistakes to learn from.
I agree.....it's pull out thirty......but we need to do it right, or we might as well stay and babysit until we figure out how. Less lives will be lost that way. Hopefully.

Re: War in Afghanistan
Get out.
Turning towards facts/history it did not turn out to well for the Brits or Russians. We shot dead the head hancho in charge so I would say mission accomplished. The afghans need to take charge of their own country and break some eggs for that omelet.
