There are a lot of non-citizens in our military. That is nothing new.

I can see your point, but i would think a non combat roll supporting the country in which you wish to reside as a citizen in certainly not too much to ask.

I can see benefits to both ideas. The Staple Act certainely has a greater chance of being passed as it seems to have support on both sides of the party line, but both proposals can have positive effects for the economy. For the Dream Act, it can turn people that are here anyways into legal, tax-paying citizens. If they're already here and already receiving benefits such as driving on new road improvements and other things that taxes pay for, having them pay the taxes as well makes the system very cost-effective. Not to mention getting military service from them can help our armed forces get some needed manpower as they're deployed all across the world in various duties.

I'd like to see both acts pass. Like Wicked mentioned however, the best idea I have heard to reducing the amount of illegal immigration is to impose real penalties upon the business' that hire illegals. If the amount of work dries up, fewer will come because there will be no way for them to earn enough to support themselves or a family. Between a combination of that and new options for legal immigration, the economy should get quite a bit of a boost with jobs going to tax-paying citizens and legal immigrants.

We need a civilian Corps, An Army homeland, that builds bridges, roads, schools, inner-city farms, etc. Illegals do work here for our country, then Citizenship is gained.
Perhaps we have one, but it needs to be bigger.

I don't think that harsher employer penalties would do much. It's a matter of enforcement from my point of view, you could fine 1million dollars per violation but if its not enforced it does nothing.

And meno hit the nail on the head. If there is no enforcement then there is no point to raising the penalties.

Personally, I agree with the idea of extending citizenship, or a fast tracked approach, to people that serve in the military. The college stipulation is a little tougher though as I can certainly see the point in "college grad, gains citizenship, stays, pays taxes" but then there is the other issue of "false educational transcripts" in order to qualify for "Dream" status. Who's going to verify that? No one wants to be bothered verifying status period as it is. Does anyone honestly think that the government will want to verify actual educational transcripts? I don't.

As for the Staple Act....I agree there as well. We ought to be allowing in more highly skilled/highly educated individuals. They should then also get some type of fast track status. If we want to hold on to the people (a la Dream Act) that get their educations here, then we ought to want to hold on to the people that come to us educated already even more.
