If I am speeding, swerving or texting while driving then that is on me. If I am doing nothing then the idiot cop just cost me a pile of money. That is an absolute real world possibility. The police have no business stopping me if I have not violated the law, period. It is already abused bad enough, we would all be for the worse if it was allowed.

Water patrol / marine police seem to violate this law more than any of the others.
You'd like the Great Lakes. Never had to deal cops/Coast Guard out there during the decade I spent on those waters. You don't really even need a passport to go back and forth between the States and Canada if you're sailing. No one would bother to ask. They don't do stops or inspections at docks/harbors. They just care that you pay your gas/electricity bill before you go.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

I have never personally ran into a roadblock, (Living in Austin), is it right to assume they are set up late, around 10PM or so? How many people set up $10,000 business deals that late at night? Do they stop a car for 30 minutes or is it pulling over, doing a breathalizer/walking a line and your on your way? It seems like a small hassle. They definitely need to have stricter laws concerning DWI.

According to the 4th Amendment you don't need probable cause if the stop is considered reasonable. An unfortunately for us the Supreme Court decided that sobriety checkpoints are reasonable.

We need something to stop all the drunks here in San Antonio, but this is not it. It's scary driving on the road after 1AM. Between wrong way drivers and drunks.

I though we were talking about stops in general, not just DUI check points. The topic has examples of where LEO's are making contact with people that are operating within their rights and not breaking any type of law.

There aren't many you see around here, and the cab companies that are around are pretty shitty.

A ride in a shitty cab is still better then jail or dead.

then explain why people don't take cabs? Obviously if cabs were some amazing option, there would be more of them around and less people driving drunk.

Can you ride a horse drunk? I think that that would be a pretty superb solution.

Im sorry but where did you see anyone say how glorious it is to ride in a cab? Your also barking up the wrong tree. I spent most of my life in big cities and cabs are everywhere. However if you need me to explain how alcohol can make people make the wrong decision then maybe you haven't been paying attention to the working of alcohol and its consumption.

I can tell you where i see a fail in the idea of taking a cab home from a bar. Its not sitting out front when you wake up so you can get back to your car. Plus there is a stigma attached to people that get drunk and take cabs home. Its stupid because they made the right call but its still there.
