06-04-11, 05:19 AM #1European E-Coli outbreak
heard about it a couple days ago, and still obviously having major problems with it, though it seems like (from the recent article) they've at least figured out what is causing it. The way the article makes it sound, is cucumbers from/in Germany are causing the spread of E. Coli. More interesting to me is how much damage it seems to be doing, I don't think I've seen a case of E. Coli that has effected people so strongly, though it may just be to over-dramatizing in the media (though the fact they are having to do blood transfusions for some people sickened by it doesn't sound good).
I'm assuming Gumby could probably chip in with more information, being the epicenter (country) is basically right in his backyard?
BBC News - E. coli outbreak: Germany appeals for blood donors
German clinics have appealed for blood donations as the number of people infected with a deadly strain of E. coli has reached 1,836 globally.
Nearly 200 new cases have been reported in two days in Germany, which has seen the most infections. The bug has killed 17 people in Germany and one in Sweden.
German scientists say the new E. coli strain's genes have been decoded. It is a new hybrid form toxic to humans.
Germans are still being advised not to eat raw vegetables...
By the way the article does go on to mention Northern Germany is the most effected. Also the Germans have appeared to piss off the Spanish (and the Spanish a pissed for a decent recent). Lastly, they provide a chart of the known cases as of June 2nd, with 2 in the US. It seems MOST of the cases outside of Germany are from people who traveled to German recently.
EDIT: BBC News - Q&A: E. coli outbreak
That Q&A link above provides more information that explains why this is causing so many problems, as well as a bit more about the causes right now, and advice if you are traveling to Germany (especially northern Germany) or over there.
Will stress, though I don't think it is needed here but just in case, you shouldn't have anything to worry about with this unless you are heading to or have been to Germany (or in the country currently).Last edited by Red_Lizard2; 06-04-11 at 05:25 AM.

06-06-11, 10:08 AM #2Its mostly an issue in northern Germany. The major effect on my area is that I cannot get my cheeseburgers the way I like them. No lettuce and tomatoes are being sold. I think the German Government mishandled the situation too. They acted like a beheaded chicken.
Sent from my Defy using Tapatalk because my computers are all busy Folding@Home for Team TPGSleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.
