Anonymous attacks Spanish police site because Spanish police did their jobs

Of course it was only for an hour, I guess they did one hell of a job *rolls eyes* but according to them, it was in response to this:

Three suspected members of the Anonymous hacking group have been arrested in Spain.

The trio are said to have been involved in co-ordinating the group's activity in that country.

The arrests were made simultaneously in three Spanish cities - Barcelona, Valencia and Almeria.

Anonymous has claimed responsibility for attacks on Sony, Spanish banks and co-ordinated action in defence of whistle-blowing site Wikileaks.

A statement from the Spanish national police force said that a computer seized in the home of one person it arrested was used in the hacks.

Thus, like I said, the Spanish police did their jobs, and Anon didn't like that so, shockingly (/sarcasm), they DDoSed one of the police's sites.

As a dual parter, since well they fit together well enough, the supposed splinter group decided to hack the US Senate website. Why? Because they could apparently. These are the guys that supposedly want to attack sites just because they can (guess they have nothing better to with school out?).

An official said the incident had been "inconvenient", but had not compromised the security of the staff.

The confirmation came after Lulz Security, a loosely aligned group of hackers, said it had carried out the attack for fun and posted files online.

Lulz has previously targeted Sony, Nintendo and Fox News.

Senate Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms Martina Bradford said the hacking had been noticed at the weekend, and that officials were now reviewing all the sites hosted on Senate.gov.

The government will want High School to go longer and not have any summer breaks to stop this.

With all the press LulzSec and the Anons have been getting lately, I am surprised that companies and government organizations are not being more careful with their stuff. Also, while I support the Anons when they go after corruption or tyranny, the cracking community is way off target IMHO when they go after targets like Sony or Nintendo and any time they go after anyone just for the lulz. Additionally, they know the risks so when they get caught, there is no reason to go after the cops.
But I suppose thats what happens when you have that mindset. Really though, if they would just grow some maturity, I have some great jobs available for people with these skills. They could be put to far better use than they are now.

Lulzsec needs to go away IMO. Those are really the guys just hacking and fucking things up for the "fun" of it. Anonymous normally has a purpose to it's attacks. I remember a few years back when they targetted Scientology and of course last year when they targetted the Westboro Baptist Church for a brief time.

Now Anonymous has quite a following and sometimes is directed by the mob mentality. One person says some guy is a jerk and they should do something and everyone follows, which is kinda stupid IMO. The real guys behind Anonymous (the ones doing the heavy lifting/hacking) are scary good and hopefully one day they'll turn around into a security professional instead of fucking with people, but who knows.

Also on a side note.

I don't expect any company or business or government to really change it's security policy due to the hacks. People claim that the companies are just so stupid for leaving things unsecured and I can assure you that that is not always the case. Most large corporations operate on a Risk Management framework. If the risks are low enough, ie the costs of cleaning up a mess are lower than the cost of securing it, most companies will not secure their systems.

It's simple business, if it costs me $50 million to clean up a mess and only has a 10% chance of happening, I'm not gonna do it if costs me over $5mil to secure. ($50mil X .1). Now that's a very simple example and the math is a little more complicated but you get the picture.

I'm sure some of these hackers legitimately want the companies to fix their shit, but they're living in a dream world if they don't understand business decisions such as these.

Apparently the Turks are the next to start doing some arresting:

Turkish police have arrested 32 people believed to be members of hacker collective Anonymous.

The group has been active in Turkey protesting against government plans to set up a national net filtering system.

Action against the group was started following a complaint from the Turkish directorate of telecommunications whose website was hit by Anonymous.
