It's because scientists were absolutely NOT predicting "global cooling."

"The supposed "global cooling" consensus among scientists in the 1970s — frequently offered by global-warming skeptics as proof that climatologists can't make up their minds — is a myth, according to a survey of the scientific literature of the era."

Hes right though. The massive amount of carbon released by human activity cant be helping climate stability. Humans in fact are the number one contributor to increasing CO2 levels, but when CO2 is compared to the full spectrum of green house gasses, its only about 3%. Im more worried about the toxins created by human activity.

I'm not arguing that humans have zero impact. My question is once again is how much of it are we causing, and how much of it would happen even if we weren't here. Pretty much impossible to 100% determine.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear, I think that we're making opposite points. I'm saying that there is a high degree of agreement that humans are likely the largest factor in the current temperature shift.

This is actually an old wive's tale. Most papers published during the 70's also predicted warming. The "global cooling" trend got a lot of attention in the media, but never had much support in the scientific community.

Why is it impossible to determine? Almost all relevant scientific bodies have agreed that it's possible to determine. What special knowledge do you have that they don't?

So where is your "control" group of earth with no human intervention?

Civil is 100% correct. All the studies in the world can not prove that what is going on right now would not be going on if we were not here. Its impossible to say because its impossible to get 100% acurate number on everything needed. The earth is estimated to be around 4 billion years old. In that time it has gone thru cycle after cycle of the same thing with most likely varying degrees. If we cant give 100% accurate number on the history, which i know no one here is going to try and suggest we can, it becomes impossible to give an accurate model of the future. That is why everytime they give an "idea" of what may happen it fails very from that mark.

But once again you people are argueing the point like someone has said humans have 0 impact. Of which has not been said by a single person.

What you people need to remember is the words estimate and theory does not mean true numbers and facts. Oh yeah and his special knowledge is common sense without the god complex.

Re: Pawlenty Raises Skepticism Over Climate Change

I also offer up this article and the thought of why have so many scientists said we are overdue for an ice age is global cooling was never a thought?

Research Claims Earth Facing Ice Age - Science News - redOrbit

"Scientists are now making an alarming claim that the earth is on the brink of entering another Ice Age that could last the next 100,000 years.
They believe a 12,000-year warming period is currently winding down.
They say ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age patterns, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years."

An interesting note from the same article.

"The Vostok data graph also shows that changes in global CO2 levels lag behind global temperature changes by about eight hundred years, which means global temperatures precede or cause global CO2 changes, and not the reverse as claimed by global warming.
In other words, increasing atmospheric CO2 is not causing global temperature to rise; instead the natural cyclic increase in global temperature is causing global CO2 to rise."
