I get my power from a 2 billion dollar publicly held company and I am totally satisfied with my rates.

And to Wicked, you want a monopoly, just one controlled by politicians. I already stated that I have, and still support, deregulation.

    Progress Seeks 31% Rate Increase | TBO.com

"The price of coal has increased almost 268 percent in the last five years," said Jeff Lyash, president and chief executive officer of Progress Energy Florida"

Lets see who should i listen to the people paying the increase? The president of progress energy? or the EIA? Im gonna go with the ones with matching statements at this point in time.

    From your article:

"Under new state law, Progress Energy can pass on to customers the cost of building a nuclear plant years before the plant begins generating power. Under the utility's plan to increase monthly electric bills next year, about $11 of the increase reflects pre-construction costs for the nuclear project."

    Blame your politicians already.

My point is i live here i've seen the rate hikes go thru year after year and ussually 2 to 3 times a year. Its hardly ever a 4 or 5 percent they ask for. 90 percent of the time they ask for 25 to 35 percent increase and it goes thru damn near every single time. Crhist 2 years ago they got 4 or 5 rate increases in 1 year.

Death I think you should really change your original question to add the words "in my area"

In MY area Water is the only Utility run by the city. My water bill is about $25 a month.

My trash, gas and electric are all private. My gas runs about $65 and electric about $75. They are private companies but the state of Kansas regulates their rates. To get a rate hike they have to go before the state congress to prove why it is needed and get their request approved. Before that happens public forums are held so that people can voice their personal opinions on why they think a hike would be bad.

    There many options out there.

God help those folks in Cali I dread deregulation cause Cali got fucked

And if it were government controlled it would be different how? My guess is if it were government controlled your rates would go up even more because the people that you talk about sitting in a hot house because they can't pay the bill would be getting cheaper/free electricity at your expense.

Push for deregulation. Competition helps breed cost control.

Shit i wish i could get a power bill for 75 bucks. However i think it still applies. Granted in your case it isnt as extreme but the question itself is still valid. I've never seen or even heard of a public forum to discuss anything regarding power companies and rate hikes and i pay attention to shit like that.

Thats kind of catch 22 so there is no way to be sure the rates would go down. My perspective is i have to look at water and gas as a compairison. Winter Springs where i live has one of the highest rates for both in the area due to of city government is a bunch of cock suckers yet it is lower then what i could get from any company per gallon.

Now gas is a bit harder to grasp for some. My bills come in therms. So if i used 13 therms at .5557 which is what im charged i got 1.3 million btus for 7.22 with fees and taxes its 27.96. Now if you go to a private company to have a tank filled around here its roughly 20 bucks give or take a dollar or to for where you go and that gets you approximately 366000 btus. So it would take about 3.5 tanks to equal lthe amount at a cost of about 60 dollars.

Now my mother house does not have gas lines. It an older home so it has an actual tank that supplies the home. Its a 200 gallon tank that can produce 18.3 million btu's. If it was to be used by a home that would cost 101.63. However seeing as its filled by a private company because its a tank it costs just under 600.

So going by precident set the rates would be lower if the government ran the show.
